Sheppard, Jr., arrived iu Edgefield on Saturday and re mained until Tuesday. For a num ber of years he h?s been very suc cessfully engaged in superintend ing and managing large mills for a wealthy Georgia cotton oil com pany, tut recently accepted a po sition as traveling representative for large fnanufacturers of oil miii machinery. His headquarters will be in Atlanta, where he and Mrs. Sheppard will begin keeping bouse early in the fall. Mr Shep pard left yesterday for a trip through North Carolina. Lee is making willi the Boles' mountain well, stated that they have gone down 115 feet without vet finding a drop of water. There is no sandy fouodatiou about Mr. Strom's palatial residence. Tbe well diggers began in rock at bis back door and have drilled in rock throughout the entire 115 feet. Mr Strom thinks some "hea then Chinee" has the sub-terrane an channel corked up, and that Mr. Lee will bavo to drill until he fiuds the cork. Mr. Wad Allen Won Medal. Mr. Jame? E. Hart donated a massive and exceedingly hand some gold medal to tbb Edgefield Rifles to be awarded at intervals to the best drilled mau in the company, tbe winner to wear the medal uutil it ie won from him at a subsequent contest. These con tests will be held every six months. Tbb first was bold on Thursday night last, the judges being Mr. W. W. Sheppard and Mr. A. L. Brunson, Jr. Those who witnessed the contest were im pressed with tho very excellent, manner iu which the men execu ted the manual of- arms. Last Wednesday and Th uri day the board of Health made their annual inspection.' They report very satisfactory conditions on tho wholp, especially the premises of private residences. rl he chair man-of the Board of Health said it had been the hardest proposi tion he had undertaken to help decide among the many neat and pretfy yards' in Edgefield. But some one bad to be tbe success ful winner of the first prize, three dollars worth of gardon imple ments. This fell to Mrs. M. A. Taylor. The second prize, one dollar iu garden implements was awarded to Mrs. John R? Tomp kins, the third priz-i went to Mrs. < A. A. Glover. The news of the sudden death of Mr. John Wash wa? a great shock to his Edgffield friends. On Thursday afternoon he WAS working cu his brother's house with some ofjhis neighbors, when he wes suddenly seized with an acute pain. After being carried to his horne he grew steadily woree until death ended his suffering about uoou of the following day. The cause of his death ie said to havo been acute indigestion. The. civic club annually takes a summer rest, and before doing so, doses up the year's work with some special occasion, either of pleasure or ph il an I h ropy, some times both combined. This year they chose a puraly social gather ing, each member invitiug a friend. On Friday evening this assemblage gathered at the home of Mrs. J. C. Sheppard, who is pr?sident of the club, and set an example to the younger genera tion by remaining into the wee small hours of the night. They will have to be excused, however, as they do not often have such delightful opportunities for en joyment and the hospitality of the home is ali to blame. There were two contests. A tablG on which fifty objects were piaced, stood in the hall, and each mem ber inspected the table -for a few minutes, then passed into the library where they underwent a memory lesson. Mrs. C. E. May won the prize, a cut gl?98 dish for remembering thirty-eight out of fifty objects, The next was a tele gram contest, each guest being given a blank telegram on which was to bo written "a message, every word beginning with the same letter. This was a very amusing contest and a difficult one.jj The prize, a scarf pin, was won by Rev. P. P. Blalock, his. message being written with the letter I. News Items From Gold -Spring. Rose Cottage has been complet ed and we are at home tb see oar friends. Come to see ns. Miss Fannie Cochran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Cochran, and Mr. M. J. Green, of Lancas ter, were married last Wednesday at Plum Branch at the home of Mr. Evan Cochran. Miss Fannie is one of Rehoboth's most beauti ful and ,*most 'popular young ladies, and will be greatly missed by her many friends. Mr. Green is one of Lancaster's largest plaut ers, and comes of ons of tho most influential families of his county. Immediately -after the ceremony* Mr. and Mrs. Green left on tho north bound train for Lancaster, their future home. We extend to them our hearty congratulations and wish for them a long and useful life. Sunday afternoou June 7th, Mr. Earnest Quarles, our popular merchant, and Miss May Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Browu, wore married at the home of the bride's father. These young people received the congratula tions of their many friends. Mr. Quarles is having him a beauti ful cottage built near his store and will noon be at home to all their friends. We wish for them a happy and useful life. Mr. John Wash, of Rehoboth, died at his home last Friday at noon, having been sick only a few hours. He was buried at Rehoboth Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock by the Woodmen of the World. Mr. Wash leaves a wife, three cLildren, a mother, four sisters and four brothers, and a host of friends to mourn his departure. We extend to all these sorrowing friends our prayers and sympathy. The many friends of Mr. Ed Winn will be pained to know that he has been quite ill for several days. We hope and pray for his speedy recovery. The excessive rains have put our farmers behind with their work. Gardens as a rule are poor, but the large crop of fruit will make up for them.
