?asa Edenfield Advertiser J. Ii. MOIS. - - - EDITOR TERMS : ONE YEAR $150 SIX MONTHS 75 WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 6,1905. WHICH? Prohibition stands pre-emi nently for piety, purity, probi ty, peace, plenty, prosperity. . Dispensary stands decidedly for deviltry, debauchery, dissi pation, degradation, drunken ness, damnation. Which do you stand for ? Let conscience answer. Greenville bas incited the Uni ted Confederate Veterans of South Carolina to hold their aonual re union in that city on October 24 : 27th. Bishop Potter, of subway saloon fame, is now an advocate of twenty minute sermoDS, which ie just twenty minutes longer than he ought ever to preach. There is DO better lubricant for the wheels of business than colton. - Since the staple has been coming in at a lively rate everything has taken on new life. Everybody loafers excepted-has gotten busy. The euD?i of summer has given place to activity and buoyancy of spirit. It"i8 quite absurd for Booker Washington to say that the influx of negroes to the towns is for the purpose of polic? protection. So far as our observation extends, tbeycome to town to loaf and liv? from" ^so me bod y's kitchen, where vheir wives or miptresses, as the case may be, cook. i The great number of applicants for the beneficiary scholarships at the Citadel, in the Bevoral coun ties where vacancies have occurred, ? indicates that this splendid insti tution is more popular and holds a warmer place in the affections of the.people than it has at any other time, in the past, for a number of . years at last. Barring possibly matrimony and the advent of his first baby, noth .ingielsemakesaman half so happy fis to receive a check for fif4y-five ? or sixty dollars for a bale of cotton. - The old bachelors* who know nothing of the first mentioned -sources of delight unspeakable, are now experiencing their highest joy in pocketing more than-half a hundred dollars for one "bag" ot If building material continues to advance as it has done within the p?Bt few years, only million aires will be able to live in houses. The vast majority of people will literally have to live under their own "vine and fig tree," or in tents. Within the last few days the Southern Lumber Manufacturers association has made another ad / - vance of one dollar per thousand . feet on all pine lumber. There are at present ninety-five saloons in the city of Augusta, but in view of the fact that the recent legislature of Georgia increased the amount of the license from -fi??to $400, it is probable that the Dumber will be greatly re duced. Another reason why it will be more difficult for the smaller dealerB to pay the increased license is that heretofore Jhe $200 was payabl? in two installment?, whereas DOW the entire $400 must be paid down spot cash. ? Chicago woman who is evi dently quite familiar with the racial conditions of the South ?writes in this very seosible vein: "The respectable negro has the respect of tho whUe people. The arrogant aod impudent oegro ie not to be toleiated aoy where. Let the black people cling to their OWD race, and help their brothers up who are Deeding help. In this lies their salvation. It is the North that keeps up the question of social equality with the black race, and still the North will not accept them in general, any more than the South will. Why keep the pot boiling ? The South will take care of its OWD, Thc best friend the black people have is JD the South.?' Edgefield sympathizes deeply with her sister towu of Johnston in the heavy losses which she has sustained. The financia] loss of the valuable warehouso and its contents is very great for a town bf Johnston's size, but far greater was the loss of that sterling citi zen, David T. Ouzts. In a few short mouths the debris of the burned building can be cleared away and a new one erected iu itt Btead, bot the loss of this good man is irreparable. His dem'se i8;mourned not only by the town of;vJoht.8ton but by the entirt ;??;'v\co?nty. He served his day and generation well and bas now re : ? ^.ceiye^ the Master's'"Well done.', In Saluda couuty the Sessions Court seems tobe almost sel feuV taining. In other words, Saluda has the good fortune to raise suffi cent fines to almost pay the ex pense of conducting court. The fines collected from the recent term aggregated $500. We would like to know whether this is due to tho great number of offenders or to large fines. If it be the latter, Edgefield would like to borrow the "rabbit foot'* that Saluda works on the prsidiug judges. It is a significant fact that in all of the counties that have voted on I the liquor question the dispensa ries have been defeated, not by small bat by very large majorit?s; and, furthermore, in the dozen or more counties in which elections are pending the sentiment is over whelmingly against the dispensa ry. This proves conclusively that the prohibition movement has ac quired such great momentum that oo combination of forces will be able to stop it as it sweeps county after county before it. God speed the day when the whiskey evil in every form .will be removed from the entire state. COLD SPRING. Your life journey leads by a way you know not. It is best you should not know. Daniel is one of our bright young men, and we are sure JjejyJlJ^S?K??eed-?n- business. 1 The farmers in this community tell us that there is only a little more than a half crop Qf cotton this^year.
