Dick Penn, colored, was disturb iug the peace of the town on Sat urday afternoon, and in his at ? tempt to arrest him Officer Dorn : fired at the negro who returned the fire and fled to his home. A short time afterwards when several offi cers went to Dick's home to make th e arrest, the latter standing upon a hil], armed with a rifle, halted the officers and turned them back. He was, however, arrested on Mon day and arraigned before council on two charges-firing upon the streets, and resisting arrest. He admitted his guilt and ?eceived the maximum sentence of $45.00 or 50 days on chain gang. The fine was paid. The only regret is that a heavier fine could not be im posed. Later Dick Penn was arrested upon the charges of assault and battery with intent to kill," and carrying concealed weapons. He is now ic jail. Solicitor Thur mona will prosecut9 the case vigor ously. Gradea School Closed. The efficient and very faithful teachers of the Edgefield Grad'd School, Mrs. Nannie G. King, Miss Hattie Newsome and Miss Minnie Dicks, have closed another very successful..session. In season aud out of season, in the class rooms and out, thepe ladies have endeavor ed to do their full duty to pupils ai.d patrons aliko, and "well done" is being heard on every hand in commendation of their good work. Indeed we have never seen acorpB of teachers give such universal satisfaction. Tho very beautiful closiug exercises of the school on Friday last'afforded visible and tangible evidence of how thorough ly and well the children have been taught. And of the children them selves, what shall we say? We re gret excaedingly that limited space will not permit a detailed write up. All of the pupils, from the lit tle tot to the oldest, performed their parts well, and the people of our community are greatly indebt ed to them for the beautiful, very beautiful, closing exercises. The Advertiaer wisheB them all-teach ers and pupilB-a very pleasant vacation. On Sunday Next. A spiritual and intellectual feast is in store for the people of this vicinity on Sunday next. It marks the beginning of the annual commencement of the South Car olina Co-Educational Justitute. In the forenoon, begiuning prompt ly at ll- o'clock, the Rev. John Bass Shelton, who ranks among the most prominent ministers in the Baptist denomination in South Carolina, and pastor of the First Baptist church of Chester, will preach the baccalaureate sermon. In the afternoon at 5 o'clock there will be a mass meeting in the college auditorium of all of the Sunday schools of tbe town. Short addresses will be made by leading representatives of the several de nominations. "In the evening at the usual hour for services. Rev. A. S. Thomas, rector of the Epis copal church at Darlington, and one of the ablest young ministers in the state, will deliver the annual sermon befare the college Y. M. C. A. Rev. Mr. Thomas is a first honor graduate of the Citadel, class 1892, hence the gray uniforms of our collegs boys will be an inspira tion to him causing his mind to revert to thoEe halcyon days when he was one of "the boys in gray.'' Successful Union Meeting. 'Ihe coming together of the members of tho seyeral churches of a given section"at stated times, such as the quarterly confereuces of the Methodist church and the union meetings of the] Baptist church, proves very helpful to ihe cause, especially when these occa sions aie entered into with zest and spirit by those in attendance. The union meeting which met with our Baptist church on Saturday and Sundav 1 ast was probably the most interesting and profitable one that has ever been held within the bounds of the Edgefield associa tion. Every one of the eight churches in the division was re presented .by earnest, consecrated Christian workers, who made .ex cellent and very encouraging re ports of the work, along all lines, in their respective churches. Good congregations, flourishing Sunday schools and increased contribu tions for missions and works of benevolence were reported. On Saturday the queries that had boen prepared were ably dis cussed aud all who were in atten dance were greatly benefitted by the uew ideas advanced and by the experiences of others. AB previously announced, the ledies spread a bounteous repast of tempt ing viands on a long table under the shady oaks near the church, where the delegates and others re galed themselves at the dinner hour on Saturday. On Sunday morning Rey. P. P. Bialock addressed the Sunday school, aud Rev. G. H. Burton, in bis earnest, and impressive man ner, preached the missionary ser mon, which was the very essence of Gospel truth. Our people were greatly delight ed that the attendance from the country churches was so lar^e and only regret that it was not even larger. Let all of the ohurcheB send fulJ delegations to the next union which will be held at Stevens Creek ohurch in July. The Misses George, two very ac complished young ladies from Latbonia, Ga., are the guests of Mrs. T. P. Burgess. The commencement week is always a gala week for our town. Already many visitors are begin ning to arrive. . Mr. James A. Timmerman had the misfortune to lose a very val uable horse on Thursday last. The animal died of pneumonia. There are already forty-five candidates out, and probably a score more will yet be made to believe that it is their duty to offer their services to the dear people. Mr. G. S. We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation from our beautiful and accomplished young friend, Miss Sallie Parker, to attend the commencement of Limestone Col lege." Miss Sallie graduated at the S. Ladies you will find just what you want in "Crushed" belts, New Ribbons and Laces, and New Cor sets.at COBB'S. According to the forecast of Rev. Irl R. Hicks, the far-famed weather prognosticator, there will be consiaerable rainfall du ring June but the showers will not he copious enough to make it a wet month. Storms attended by strikingly beautiful electrical phenomena will also occur. It is useless to further grieve over the partial failure of the grain crop. Eudeavor to make up for this shortage by a large acreage of corn, supplementing the latter with a heavy planting of peas. Af ter all there is no better feed for stock than pea hay. Stock thrive well on this alone, except in the plowing season. Thu farmers in the clay sections of tho county have been greatly inconvenienced and retarded in their farming operations by the poor Btands of cotton and corn. The rains that have -fallen in the last few davs will, we trust, re lieve their embarrassment. It costs just as much to cultivato a crop where the stand is imperfect as it does when the stand is good. A negro who, in crowded streets, fires upon an officer, who attempts to arrest him, and, making good his escape, arms himself with a Winchestf3r rifle, defying the offi cers of the law who later make a futile attempt to arrest him, is not such a citizen as Edgefield needs. He should be invited to take up his abode elsawhsre, forcing him, without violence, to accept the in vitation. Get your dresses for the com mencement and street wear from us. Our line is complete. Timmous has a dish and a plate that were left on the table when dinner was served at the Baptist church on Saturday. The owner ca:i get them by sending for them. Mrs. Timmons lost a pretty salad dish that she would be pleased to have returned to her. Probably some one in the confu sion incident to the occasion put the dish in their basket through mistake. Rev. Marvin Auld went to Green wood on Wednesday to confer with his brothers who lost heavily (upwards of $5,000)in the very disastrous fire of last week.
