The next generation of boys throjghoiit the South will proba bly be named Alton Parker for the - next president. '_ 'ibe Republican party finds it difficult to secure a ruDning mate for the "terrible Teddy." Thus far no one bas signified his willing ness to become a candidate for the vice-presidency on the Republican ticket. It is alleged that many Japanese - women have donned men's uni forms and marched to the front. This accounts for the Japs' re peated victories. Certain members of their ranks never let up. They must have the last word, blow or crack of the rifle, as the case may be. _ Surely the people of Edge jeld county will, be surfeited in the matter of voting this year. Every - office from coroner to president, except Judge of Probate, is to be filled. To the latter office the worthy Judge J. D. Allen has, we might eay, been elected iu per petuity. Innovations nnver cease, the latest being a decree of the pope ? excluding female voices from all Catholic choirs. It appears to one without the pale of the Catholic| church that if either must be hushed, in order to improve the music, it should be the guttuial voices of the men and not the sweet voices of the'vonen. It is the purpose nf the state board of dispensary directors to enforc9 that clause of the law which prohibits the drinking ot beer in the beer dispensaries and in places adjoining tho premises. If the law is enforced as it should be those who patronize beer dis pensaries'will be compelled to un cork their bottles away from the place where the purchase is made. Several Chinamen were arrested in Augusta recently under the Chinese exclusion act. If Augus ta dosB not want any moro of them within her borders we would wei come some of the best element of the race to Edgofield. A Chinese laundry would not be a bad thing for our town. The trifling and very unreliable washer-women should have competition. We'd like to try washer-men for awhile. The thoughtful and kind hus band will leave hie business trou bles in his office, store or out on the farm, as the case may be, when the day's work in ended, and will ' not pour out a tale of woe to his good wife, who, tired and carc-i worn, eagerly awaits his home-1 coming. She has cares and per plexities enough of her own. Like wise, the good wife will not relate in tiresome detail to her husband the many annoyances aud vexa tions which she daily encounters -in her domestic affairs. Each should be free to advice and sym pathize with the other but not burden unnecessarily with petty annoyances that are past and can not be righted. ' "Children's day'' at Bethlehem is au event in which the Sabbath School aims to show its progress from year to year. Their happy, merry voices carried joy to ail who heard them in the stilly night.. Our oil mill proposes to sink an artesian well at an early date. The scarcity of water has been an obstacle all along. Mr. W. L. Coleman has been the first to ship peaches. Mrs. J. B. Hill of,Edffefield vis ited her daughter Mrs. W. D. Ready. We heard a lady living about sevenv miles from town remark the other day :" am going to Au gusta tomorrow, to do my shop ping. I used to feel in duty bouu'd to stimulate home enterprise by my patronage, but when it is an nounced in the papera that our merchants wives go to town to do their shopping I no longer feel that way." Mrs. Luther Oxner left for Georgia Sunday afternoon to visit her father who is seriously ill. Mrs. J. J. Weatherford and little daughter, of Clearwater, are visiting the home of Mr. M. K. Lowry. Appropriate Resolutions Upon the Death of Miss Robbie Hill. At the regular monthly meeting of the Womans Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist church the following resolutions were adopted: For the first time in eighteen years v e are called upon to mourn j for one of our members. Miss Robbie Hill is the first "to cross over the river." In her death we have lost a faithful member, therefore be it resolved, 1st. We would place upou record Dne appreciation of her worth. In failing health Bhe retired from ac ive work ; a few days ago amid the loved members of her home 6be intered into rest. She was ever oyal to her Lord. May we cherish 1er memory and imitate her vir ues. She wag truly "a living pistle." To live in hearts we leave lehiud :s not to die." Resolved 2nd.
