The effott to increase the en dowment of that pplendid ii.stitu tioD, Woffoid college, by $100,000, is a very praiseworthy one and should succeed. The fact that no vice-president of the United States who became president has ev*r been elected to succeed himself is cousoling at this juncture to the people of every section of tne country. One may not receive golden eggs from such an enterprise, but. there is no denying the fact that a poul try farm, conducted in a proper and businesslike manner, would pay here in Edgefield. For the past )ear or two there has been a steady demand for chickens and eggs at fourteen-cents-cjtton prices. Only a small outlay would be required to begin such a busi ness, from which large returns would be received. Very few of the many latter day authors achieve fame and fortune. A notable exception, however, be ing the author of "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch." While prior to two years ago Mrs. Alice Hegau Rico-was unknown in the world of letters, to-day she is much sought after and the reading public de vours with avidity the productions of her fertile genius From her two books and stage royalties Mrs. Bice has received over $100,000. At this season of the year there is but little or no farm work to be {lone and every white child in the county who has attained to the :?^age?.o? six years should be attend :. ing school regularly. Some par - 'enfft .fl rfifnr fp~ ' 1 "r"' ^Keenly^the ':need of an education and the lack of it will seriously handicap them in these days of Bharp competition. What ?B the matter ? Notwith standing the fact that the amount of taxable property in South Caro lina has, with each succeeding year, been increased by millione, the amount of taxes paid by the indiyidual has also increased. Furthermore, in Bpite of this increase the state has, from year to year, fallen ?hort of funds. , - "!* "???*".? *\ fa-t<v.ncR.rlv naif a million dollars. There ?B room and need for retrenchment or better financiering. Those dainty, diminutive pets, canaries, have become more popu lar and have greatly advanced iu price since King Edward has made a hobby of canaiy breeding. Some of these birds sell for four times their weight in gold, a pair bring ing $350 recently in London. The air is permeated with such a fever ish desire to speculate that doubt less canaries, along with other commodities that are in demand, will be listed by the "bulls and the bears." Doesn't somebody want a contract for "May" canaries. Cotton is indeed king and is not likely to be dethroned for some years to come. Not only have the open diOTB of the countries of the Orient increased the demand and ' price of coarse cotton goods but right here at home cotton fabrics which have undergone a special ?> treatment are supplanting the finer weaves of wool and Bilk. A new process has been discovered whereby cotton cloth, after under going chemical treatment, is made as water proof as sheet tin, hold ing water for days without letting a drop through. t The ADVERTISER furnishes its 1 readers this week with the message | of Governor Heyward to the legis- r lature. Both bodies of the Gen- c eral Assembly, to the surprise of 8 everybody, got down to real busi- * ness as soon .as they convened. r JR?preeentative Raiusford has ? again taken np-the-fight for-a con- i stit?tional amendment to increase 0 the jurisdiction of "magistrates v which will save the people thou- ^ . sands of dollars.
