Although beat by 30 votes I have no regrets nor censures to make. Hope the people have made a wise selection. I will do my whole duty to make ; jfajfl administration a success. I fully realize what he has to do as I have found no section of Edge field county but what is complain ing of the conditions of the public . roads. So with pleasant recollec tions for all and trusting that Mr. D. P. Self will be able to bridge all the streams, macadam izo around the hills, clay the saud, and sand the clay at some near future day, I am very respectfully, JNO. M. MAYS. Edgefield, July 10, 1903. Another Household Bereaved. Having known her from infancy to womanhood the writer was made very sad bv the death of Miss Velma Lowrey, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W, B. Lowrey, which occurred on Thursday afternoon last at the home of her parents, thirteen miles north of Edgefield. Sh? was a sister of Mrs. R. E. Morgan ' of our town, whom she had visited frequently. The deceased was in delicate health for many months but now she is peacefully resting where neither pain nor sorrow eau , enter, for she loved and trusted Him who gave His life that we might have life more abundantly. ! The many friends of this amiable, "entie, sweet tempered young lady will miss her bright [aud happy smiles but they 'can look forward to a reunion on the other shore. i The interment took place on F/i r day last at McKendree, of whiob , church the deceased was a member, - the Rev. Geo. W. Davis office ting i To the grief-stricken family, our 1 near neighbors during childhood and youth, we tender our deepest sympathy. * Death of An Aged Lady. [ Mis. Sarah Parker, wife of Dr. Horace Parker and eldest of the children of the lamented Capt. James Dom, is no more. She calmly and peacefully departed this life at her home in our north ern suburbs on Thursday last, in the 69th year of her age. This good woman was but little known by the younger generation, for she cared ?nothing for the vanities aud gaieties of society. Her chief purpose in life being to make home and those about her happy. Those who knew her best loved her most. Mrs. Parker wap possessed of many virtuos and graces of character and haviup been faithful throughout a long probation on earth she .has gone to share heavenly joys with loved ones who have gone before ber. Mrs. Parker is survived by : voted husband and seven affecti onate children, all of whom were with.her in her last illness except Mrs. Rotert Easterling, of Barn well. The luuoial was conducted Fri day afternoon from our Baptist church, of which the deceased wai a member, tho Rev. P. P. ( Handsome yoong John Milton Sell, of Parksville, came over ou | friday last for his sister, Miss \ bettie Bell, who had been attend- ; ng the summer school. After spending several weeks in Greenwood visiting relatives, Mrs. : !da F. Sheppard returned on Fri lay labt accompanied by her )right and pretty little grand laughter, Floride Miller. Now is the time to use lime and vhite-wash. The man who uses 1 ;he whitewash brush freely ibout his premises adds fifty per- 1 ;ent to their healthfulness and o the beauty of their appearance. M'S, David Lopez, a lady of inusual culture and refinement ind one of Atlanta's''four hun dred," is visiting at the home of Mrs. J. Rerrien; Walker. Mrs Lopez is accompanied by two beautiful little children. Miss Rhett Sheppard has been visiting friends in Nebwerry where she was entertained in a most charming manner by having par ties, dancep, etc., giyen in her honor. Miss Annie Durisoe and Master William Griffin Durisoe, daughter aud sou of Mr. JohD Durisoe, who wasborn andreared in Edgefieldbut resides now in Washington, D. C., ire visiting Mrs. Nannie Griffin ?nd Mr. and Mrs. D *R. Durisoe. Mrs. Ella S. Tompkins and Miss Grace have gone to Knox ville. They will return via Salu da, N. C., the popular summer re sort, where they will spend some time. We greatly miss the sweet vocal and instrumental music and sere nades of the three pntty and ac complished young teachers who boarded near our home in Bun combe while attending the summer school. "Faith," "Hopo" and "Love," these three being Missea Mattie Lyon, Nettie Bell and Cor rie Elkins. Mr. D. T. Grico has laid aside business for a ten days rest, hav ing joined Mrs. Grice and the children at Sha on, Ga., the home of Mrs Grice's parents. SQ de lightful is tbe climate and country round about Sharon that we shall expect to see them all return with rosy cheeks and with a consdiera ble gain in avoirdupois. . A soap manufacturer, who never used sign boarde, etc., as a means of advertising, on being asked why he did newspaper advertising al together, said : "in my experience I have found that the mau who does't read the newspaper never uses soap," and we guess he was about right. Says an exchange : "A young lady wants to know how to make 'not enough' out of the word 'enough'. That is easy. It is done by transposing them into two words. Take the third, second and first letters for I he first word, the sixth, fourth and fifth for the sec ond, and you have something that is not enough for any lady." The many friends of Dr. L. R. Gwaltney and Miss Mareie Gwalt ney will be pained to know the latter is very critically ill with typhoid fever. She was taken sick at Gainesville where she was at tending the summer school but has been removed to their home in Rome. Tho sympathy and prayers of their Edgefield friends are with them in this trying hour. The wife of a Wichita, Kansas man makes him wear tucks in his night-gown, trimmed with pink ribbon, BO that the baby won't know the difference when he walki the floor with it at night. The Edgefield fathers will say we ought not to have put thia new idea into the heads of the Edge field mothers. The life of Mr. E. H. Talbert was insured in the New York Life Insurance company, which is represented in Edgefield by Mr. James T. Mims. Within two weeks from the death of Mr. Tal bert Mr. Mims received a check for the face of the policy, plus all premiums that had been paid. This very liberal and prompt set tlement speaks well for this large and progressive company. We are deeply cone erned about the condition of a certain young lawyer in Edgefield. His cheek? have lost their accustomed rose ate hue; his voice no longer hag a merry riug and he now wears a long lace aud a far-away look. Wc fear that he has heart trouble. His physician should advise him tc take a trip. The climate rounc1 about Schenectady, N. Y., is high" ly rocommended. The senatorial bee is not buz zing around Hou. J. W. De Von as bas been reported. The volume of mail that ie handled by the Edgefield office continues to increase. There was a time when there was not a demand for all of the first install ment of lock boxes. Gradually all were rented and still the* de mand for others came. In order to meet the ueeds of the patrons of the office Capt. Brunsou has ad-1 ded 21 new boxes and two drawers, j The drawers are locked by combi-| nations which does away with the j annoyance of losing the key, Edgefield, S. C. July 11th 1903.
