Judging by the falling off| of tlie privilege tax income, commercial fertilizers are not being purchased as exten sively this year as last Up to March ist last year the privilege tax income was $57 697, while the fund for the same period this year is only j $40,630, a falling of $17,000. The total income last year was $84,ooo,and it is estimat ed, by those in a position to form a correct opinion, that the aggregate will not exceed $70,000 this year. Evidently, the farmers of some sections of the state will not fertilize their crops this year so heav ily as last. The farmers of this vicinity are hauling about as much as during former years. The state campaign will very probably wax warm be- j fore the primary. The great number of candidates, repre senting every section of the state, in connection with a change of past conditions and influences, caused by redis tricting the state, make it] extremely difficult, in fact, impossible, to even vaguely forecast the result. Interest will be centered around the gubernatorial, senatorial and congressional races on ac-| count of the unprecedented number of prominent men who desire to serve the dear people. The men asking for the suffrage of the people in this campaign must do so on their own merits, not on thedemer its of their opponents. Pup lic sentiment in South Caroli na will not longer tolerate the demegogic methods of secur ing votes by arraying class against class and "fomenting | strife and discontent. Let it I be a campaign that will be elevating instead of degrading. AERIAL COMMUNICATION. Wireless telegraphy is no longer an experiment but a pronounced success?? The Italian inventor, Marconi, who discovered and developed the system, has received a mes sage a distance of 1550 miles, while on board a vessel in mid-ocean. That he actually received the message as sent is attested by the Captain and chief officer of the vessel on which the receiving instru ment was located. The installation of the sub marine cable marked a new era in electrical development. Soon its abandonment will mark the beginnig of Uill greater achievements in the application of this subtle force or energy. The aerial or, wireless system is certain to supplant the presen*- means of interocean communication, being operated s o much cheaper the cable companies can not compete with it. Marconi says, "the distance a wireless message can be sent is limited only by the power of the sending ma chine." The most wonder ful feature of the system is the tuning of the transmitter with the receiving instrument so that no other receiver can intercept or record the mes sage. Aerial communication will be of a great value in giving and receiving orders to and from vessels in time of war. We wonder at being able to converse itor hundreds of mrles over a wire, even recog nizing an individual's voice; still greater is the wonder of communicating without ap parently having any means or medium of communication. Boundless are the possibilities ol the human mind in utilizing the material things of earth and immaterial, ?is for that matter^for electricity is not materi^ having neither lei)gti?^re?dth nor thickness.
