"It is a poor rule that will not work both ways." Wars make presidents and presi dents make wars. The Chester Lantern con tained last week one of the best articles we have read on the subject of lynch law. In the window of a New York saloon appears a sign containing this : "All Nations Welcome Here (but Carrie)". , From a romantic and nov elistic standpoint President Roosevelt started life with two great handicaps-wealth ! and ill health. Roosevelt is an author, sol dier, statesman and president. He held office under the ad ministration of Presidents Harrison and Cleveland. President Roosevelt obtain ed his name from the Dutch, from the Scotch his obstinacy, from the French his impetu osity, and from the Irish his gift of tongue. Theodore Roosevelt is the youngest president we have -~ had and has twice been mar ri^ qnrl hoc more children -, I ' S?t - *r*.:* - t..y~i?.:. ,'H!'".> . ; rr.-^rs..L:. - -... ^T fo trial commenrr? ?i^ii rr^p'^j morning. The assassin refuses to speak when questioned by the court. When inkless prinitng be comes a permanent success the office towel must go, as electricity will not furnish the neccessary dye to give it its distinctive character. We have lots to be thankful for even if we work near hell and with the devil and live on pie. This is better than the prom ises of delinquents ? One of the newest special ties in Paris this season is the hand-painted hat. What will the milliner's bill cost, will be disturbing the men as the sea son advances. We expected j this. The ladies dye their hair and paint and powder their faces, and it is natural they should want their hats to share in the glory. But God bless them, we love them yet. The Graniteville News is suffering the discomforts of an attack of "melon-colic." We knew the editor*was disabled from some cause, for no one would have accused Mr. Mc Kinley of being an anarchist and rascal, unless he had not a case of some sort of "colic." As his beard grows may his mind broaden and enable him to see Hie better qualities of a fellow-citizen, instead of try ing to see the imperfections of frail humanity. . Some newspapers have al ready condemned our new president and expressed fears of his administration. As to .his following Mr. McKin ley's policy, it is impossible to do that. He may try to, but who knows what his policies may have been had he lived a year or so longer ? We, as southern people have too little confidence in the chief mag istrate. We are too ready to express disapproval and find fault before we have any just cause for so doing. Let us withhold these little criticism and try to see something in ihe president beside faults. Tompkins. WASHINGTON, Sept, 7, 1901. I am sending out some pamphlets on the subject of good roads, which will give more fully than I could write my views. I hope very much that the movement at Edge field will be the inauguration of a system of regular road working, and of a special tax to pay the cost of the same. To do this would be to make a very distinct advance for the county. No c?unty in the United States has abandoned the old and adopted the new system, of a special tax and ocular work on the roads, , \ -I it ad vantage nty, Meck is notable. >L. landsjias i.'t this is in . -...rt st I more diie There are four elements necessary to the success and progress of the people. These are : ist. Good Churches, 2d. Good Schools. 3d. Good Saving Institutions. 4th. [Good Roads. These develop (1) Chris tian character; (2) Intelli gence; (3) Thrift and Econ omy; (4) Social and Com mercial Intercourse. The re sult of these is always success and prosperity. Committees Appointed for the Woman's Work, Etc, The members af the com mittee to secure an exhibit of Woman's Work for Edge field county for the Exposi rion at Charleston are : Mesdames Thos. Each member of the com mittee is to go to work right away and solicit exhibits of all kinds of woman's work, and^all the ladies are urged to contribute something, as it should be a representative ex hibit. The articles may be sent to any member of the committee, who will take charge of them until time for shipment. Contributions of money are solicited from all persons of the county to de fray expenses of freight, dec oration of space, and all fix tures, such as necessary coun ters for valuable articles, and also for keeping exhibits free from dust and in order. This will be done by exposition au thorities at a small cost. ? By an oversight I. C. Levy's Sou & Co.'s ad was not chaDged. Go to Augusta and buy a suit from bim and we'll change it next week. Obituary. On Sunday night, September 8, 1901, at ll o'clock, the spirit of Mrs Alice Hammond, wife of Mr Tommie Hammond, took its flight from this world to dwell with Jesus in that world beyond. All that a loving and devoted husband,-skilled physicians and sympathizing friends could do was ! done for her recovery, but all in va,n| She had served her time on earth and, like Paul, was "ready to be offeredAup." It was the sweet privilege of the writer to be with her in her last illness, and hear her talk about her departure. She did it with so much calmness and Christian for titude. Never a murmur or com plasnt escaped her lips, but she of ten said sLe was willing to lie on her bed of affliction just as long as her heavenly father saw fit. None that stood around her death-bed could doubt the reality of the Christian religion. Since the death of her dear sis ter a year ago, she seemed im pressed that her time on earth was short, and that she must be ready when the summons came, and in deed she was ready. Her pastor, Rev J T Littlejohn, conducted her funeral services at the Red Hill church. His text was: "There remaineth therefore a rest for the people of God." All our hearts go out in sympa thy for the husband and children. May God, in His loving kind ness, comfort them, and grant that they may meet her again on that "beautiful shore." ONE WHO LOVED HER.
