Mr. "Mark Toney was in town OP Monday. 'There were services in every churcb in town last Sunday. Dr. D. A. J. Bell and H. W. Dobey, Esq., were up from Parksville this week. A light snow on Saturday of last week brought joy to the hearts of our little folks. You may sow spring oats now and until March with a fair prospect of a good yield. Mr. Beauregard Timmons has sold his resiJence on Columbia street to Mr. J. W. Peak. I will handh; again this season the goods of the Patapsco Guano Co., full ammoniated, etc. E. J, NORRIS, Edgefield, S. C. Col. Jas. T. Bacon will deliver his lecture "Kranky Kaleidescope" in Co lumbia to-night. . Happiness reigns in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Bell-they have a per manent little lady visitor. ? Miss Marie Boykin has returned after an extenden visit to relatives in Abbeville and Mt. Carmel. Our Legislators in Columbia seem to be baffled by the "liquid fire of hell,' otherwise known as "distilled damna tion." There will be a chorus of 10,000 voices at its opening session. "They" might as well run cotton up to 8 cents, for our friend Abe Broad water declares he will not sell his cot ton until he gets that for it. Representative N. G. Evans was at home for a few hours on Saturday last Capt. Evans is making quite a name as. a law maker at.this session of the Leg islature. "And camp life wasn't a bit like home_was it, hubby, dear?" ) uM*m, weil, the cooking was about ' tile same, but we didn't see any actual warfare you know." ? ""Order your Fertilizers and get them home before the bottom falls out of the road?. E. J. NORRIS, Edgefield, S. C. Mrs. C. A. Coob, formerly a resident of Edgefield, died at the home of her "husband in Atlanta on last Friday. The interment was from the Church of the Sacred Heart in that city on Sunday. The farmer who has well ' filled corn cribs, barns and smoke house, with a little cotton still nnsold, should be truly thankful. Let us hope that next . year will see thousands in that condi tion. There is more money in raising dish rag squashes than in cotton. We will furnish seed to any enterprising farm er who wishes to try the dish-rag j squash this year, or will put him on track of some. MIMS. Our efficient teaoher, Miss Ada La Grone, of Johnston, Edgefield county. S. C.. is doing a noble work. There are about forty pupils on the roll. We have Sunday-school at our school house every Snnday afternoon. The super intendent, Mr. C. M. Lanham, is de voted to the cause. Through the energy of our ladies we were enabled to pur chase a neat little organ last fall for the benefit of the Sunday-school. What a. sweet privilege it is after passing through the arduous duties of the week to meet in our Sunday school and study God's word and blejad our voices in praise to Him who is the giver of every good and perfect gift. Ready Norris, after a linger ing.illness, died yesterday at the resi dence of his father, the Rev. A. P Norris, in tiiis city. Mr. Norris came to Columbia from Augusta, hoping that the change would *beof benefit to him, as he had been in bad health for some time, but in spite of all that could be done for him, he grew worse rapidly. Judge Bell, known hereabouts as Chief Justice Bell, was all aglow on Monday morning last when an unfor tunate "colored brother" was brought beiore him for mistreatment of his baby girl-a wee tot of a thing. But the Judge was kindly of heart that morn ing, and he lectured the colored coon and talked to him lovingly about; the precious little darling babes-and told him that "They're the sunbeams on life's snow They're the heart-lights here below." And the colored coon aforesaid wilt ed and blubbered,, and the Chief Jus tice likewise almost blubbered out right, and he told the colored brother to go hence and sin no more, remem -bering that "The bright days-they're coming, no matter what they say; Beneath the snows of winter dreams the violets of May And sometime-in the future, in the golden years to be, There'll be blossoms in the desert and the streams'll sing to thee." 4nd the offending negro went on his way rejoicing, and so did Judge Bell, who hied away to his own home, with a somewhat pompous stride, to take ! another peep at the little girl baby that put in its appearance at his house the day previous. We would remark, however, in jus tice to the Judge, that ordinarily, and j no new first baby in the premises, thar : that negro's sentence would have been I "Ten dollars or thirty days on the county chain gang." My ide?is, if you love me, say so-and don't be afraid you will say it too often. Its a joy to a woman's beart, and a balm in her hour of sorrow or trouble.
