Edgefield Advertiser WEDNESDAY, JULY 21,1897. MART CANTELOU ERUNSON On laBt Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock the sad and grief-stricken friends of Mrs. Arthur Branson gathered in the Baptist Church to pay their loving tribute, to her memory. In bpite of the exceed ingly inclement weather, many from country and town were pres ent. Mrs. Branson was the only daughter of the late Rainsford Cantelou, Esq., and Mrs. Mary Cantelou. Fourteen months ago Mrs. Branson was married, at her home by Rev. J.- P. Mealing, who also received nor confession ??of faith ia her Saviour many years ago, and also officiated with the assistance-of Dr.. L. R. Gwajtney, at her funeral ceremonies.: His) words wore full of comfort to the* bereaved, and an inspiration to a better arid more useful life to all who listened to them. Mrs: Bran son was beloved with intense de votion bykher husband, brothers, and mother, for she was a woman of tender sympatriie3, anvl full of loving deeds, and self-sacrificing love for those about her. ' The Lord knoweth them that are His," and often sends the reaper to take them ere" the hearts o: earth's loved ones are prepared to' relinquish them. But so it seems good in His sight, and who can question the wisdom of the Almighty, for His ways are past finding out. ''There-' fore be ye also ready , for ye know, not the day nor the nour, wherein the Sou of Man cometh.". ; .*Tbere hope's sweet Howers eternal bloom ' While seasons come and go, Untouched by sorrow's quilling winds, That blight us here below. < But with that bright, angelic throng, And friends who've sore before. . EDITOR: As you well know each, county is entitled to one Sen. ator-no more nor no less-and yet virtually Greenwood has two Senators and E?ge?el? none. And that is not as it should be. Yet some people-^people with a mo tive perhaps-say that we had bet ter let the "Greenwood gentlemen" ' hold their Edgefield offices; that said ''gentlemen" will do as well as any, and that to hold another election will be trouble and ex pense for nothing. Out upon such reasoning. It is, not right for a Greenwood man to hold an Edge field office and make laws for the Edgefield people, and no amount of argument can make it right and if it is not right, why we as a free people should battle for the right until tho wrong is remedied. And th? miserable bosh that a Greenwood man can represent us as well as an Edgefield man, is a doctrine altogether against com mon eense and the rights of the people. Therefore, so, long as the "Greenwood gentlemen" Gain?e and Yeldell, refuge to give up their illegally held offices, so long ought the people denounce them as vain Pretenders and arrogant Usurpers. To these views, Mr. Editor, hum bly but honestly given, I will ever HOLDTIGHT. Petit Jurors, August Term. FIR8T WEEK. The matter of appointment Is a social one says he, Ab well as a political reward, And where there never was a negro P.M. There shall never be one in accord. Now, Mr. Editor, agreeable to a former declaration of Gen. Gary, that no democrat need apply for appointment or reinstatement where there can be a republican black or white found, I have to Bay that if his former and later decor ations mean anything they mean the effectual elimination of demo cratic and colored republican ap plicants. Thus you see the race is entirely with white republicans. As for Edgefield P. 0. we 'iave only two applicants, viz.: W. D. Ramey and T. A. Odom. Let us contain our souls in patience for either one is so much better than a negro postmaster. " A COLORED PATRON. News from Ropers. (TJi is letter should have appeared lait week. MK.
