Sweet potatoes are small and few in a hill. The phenomenally dry Sep tember did the business for the sweet potato. Remember that the examination of applicants to teach in the public schools of this county takes placeon Friday and Satucday of this week. Some of the counties are doing won derful work on the roads with their convicts. How is Edgetield getting along in this respect? Miss Annie Kimbrough, of Augus ta, well known in this place, was mar ried to Mr. W. B. Steele same city, one day last week. The board of county commissioners holds their annual meeting on Thurs dav, the 7th of November. See notice in auotber column. Less hay raised in this county this season than for many years The rea son is appajent, it did'nt rain enough to make the grass grow. Will some of our readers who tried rice this year report their experience to this office that others seeing their good works may do likewise. Mr. R. M. Hays, .?o well and favora bly known in this community, is with us again. The many friends he has made in Edgefield will be glad to know this fact. Flammarion, the French astronomer accounts for the excessive ht..t of September by the statement that for two hundred years there has never been such a cloudless September. W. E. Lynch has great faith in the future of Edgetield, and Edgetield has great faith in W. E. Lynch's integrity generally aud especially in his pains taking care in the compounding of prescriptions. Our old friend Dr. W. 1). Jennings, Sr., is with us again alter a two months absence, looking as well asa man could who is on the eve of enter ing the holy bonds of matrimony. The Misses Aycock will sell milline ry in the latest styles at Edgefield ard Ridge Spring. They solicit a liberal share'of the patronage and are sure to please. There is such a thin?as knowing too much. We have seen people who would be wiser if they could forget half they knew and didn't know one-fourth of the other half. Will some one write to the editor of the ADVERTISER and tell him how to make the plumes of the pampas grass Huffy? We want to fix one to brush the dies off Ben Tillman when he goe3 to Washington. Irby says he has'em on him. Prof. B. F. Sample. Pedagogue, is about to issue a new paper for Saluda county, the iirst copy of which will be printed and distributed from New berry,-" The SALUDA SOCK DOWAGER." It is about time that the little boys in the Reform Circus should get "some more" lemonade, take one more look at the elephant and crawl out under the tent. The Ring Master and the Clown are about to turn all the animals loose. The time is at hand for sowing small grain, and because you have corn enough to do you is no reason why you should not sow a little wheat a little rye and a good deal of oats. Remember that after all these cereals you can plant corn or rice, and thus make two crops in one twelve month. Dr. Gwaltney's sermon in our Bap tist church on last Sunday morning was most beautiful, the peroration was especially eloquent and touching. "Oh Israel, thou hast destroyed thy self." Last year, in order to save his vines, Mr. Manly DeLoach made tenement houses out of pea vines, houses with hall-ways and passages and verandas and piazzas. But he found these pea houses took up too much of his valua ble land, and this year he has purchas ed and uses a press for packing his vines in small compass. M. P. B. Lanham, of the Roper* sec tion came very near losing his whole herd of cowsT fifteen in number, one night of last week. They broke out of the lot and got ?'.ito the pua field. Press bought fifteen pounds of sod-i, (the merchants ought to have let him have it at wholesale rates) and drenched ?very one of them with a pound a {?ieee, lt is needless to say he did'nt ose a single one of the entire lot. Horace Greeley once said : ' The way to resume is to resume," speaking of again putting gold into circulation after the war. But you may say "re sume" any number of times to that torpid liver of yours and it won't budge until you take Simmons Liver Regulator. Many people seem to for get that Constipation, Biliousness and Sick Headache are all caused by a sluggish liver. Keep the liver active. One half an acre in rye on good laud would give you an abundance of green food for one horse and one cow. You can commence cutting it with a reap hook the first of March ; later as it gets larger you can cut it with a cradle. It may be cut several times and then make a fair crop of rye that you can feed to your pig3. As an all round crop for soiling purpose rye downs them all. It withstands the winter better than wheat, it can be cut often er than < ;its and is more succulent and nourishing, and as a milk produc er it is almost, if not altogether, equal to barley or wheat. From the size of the pile of cane, belonging to Mr. Abe Broadwater and heaped up at Senator Butler's- syrup manufacturing establishment, . we would suppose that h? would make a thousand gallons. Friend Abe ought to give a "sorghum strechii;'" and invite five hundred antis and the same number of reformers and let 'pm pull one against the other and in this way settle our political differences and .top this everlasting fussing and quar relling and fighting. aa Fresh and dainty-heavy and fancy groceries, at W. An editor who flied of starvation was being escorted to heaven byan an gel who had been sent for that pur pose. "May I look at the other place before we ascend to eternal happi ness?" asked the editor, "Yes," said the angel. So they went below and skirmished around taking in the sights. The angel lost track of the ed itor and went around Hades to hunt hin: up. He found him by a big fur nace fanning himself and gazingwith rapture upon a lot of people in the Are. There was a sign on the furnace which read "Delinquent Subscribers." "Oet a inov? on you," said the angel, "we must go." "You go on," said the edi tor, "lam no* coming. This place is good enough for me."-Ex. One by Oue the Roses Fall. Co!. John Terry of L!ckskillet, pri vate secretary to Mai. Lem. The friends of these happy young peopie will all join in best wishes for their future life and happiness. The Ohio Man. nereis what an Ohio man did in Alabama, and what he's doing in Ala bama can be done in Edgefield, m fact he has done done it. But let us see what thc Ohio man did: "He took a farm of sixty acres where a family of six negroes with an ox and a mule had been gradually starving to death. He planted cow peas and let them die on the ground. He sowed crimson clover among the peas at the right time. The next season the land was properly enriched by these to grow good crops of cotton and corn, in both of which he sowed crimson clover again. He plowfd in to the clay subsoil a little deeper eve ry year. Ile pulverized che soil thor oughly before planting a crop. He added cows until he had ten. He sav ed and applied the manure. The fourth year he made off of the place, net, al most $1,000." ---M MMMBHMPBflMM "tetWT MRS. SABRA MILLER. This good woman died at her home near Trenton on Monday night last of paralysis.
