Thousands of wr stern farmers have settled in South Carolina, North Caro lina and Georgia, but as yet none have struck this immediate section. Gov. Northen has recently settled sev en thousand families in that State, probably thirty thousand people. The "Walhalla Courier of last week says: "The merry songs of the lactory hands make the early morning hours uite melodious, and everybody seems move with a quicker step. A spirit f enlightened enterprise and busi ess enthusiasm is coming on apace." J Vhen can we say this about Edge eld? Your) druggist sells it in powder and liquid; the powder to be taken dry, or made into a tea. Tiie Way it is in Greenville. The building of the mills has al ready had its effect on real estate near by. One gentleman sold one acre a short time ago for $500 that could have been bought twelve months ago for $100. Another refused $500 for one acre and $1000 for 10 acres. Don't get | too high, gentlemen, or you will turn off business.-Greenville Mountain eer. Breeding: for Speed. Geni. Butler has forty-one breeds of bogs on his stock farm in the suburbs of our town. Among others we name the Berkshires, Chesters, Poland Chi nas, Rhaniseutahs. and Razorbacks. The General is a great believer in the survival of the littest and he hopes by mixing up the breeds in this way that a struggle will be produced that will evolute a breed the fittest of all others for this climate and this people. His special aim is to get a plump, rotund body on long slender, deer-like legs so as to be fleet of foot, or in plain En glish, he wants a beg that can outrun a lugger and.still be easily fattened. Now, whenceSxomes the report that Geni. Butler is going into the repub lican parly in the face of this fact, that he is ostentatiously breeding np to a species of swine that can outrun the great majority of its voters and the fleetest of its runners. Personal Mention. - The lion. W. II. Yeldell was in town on Tuesday ol' this week. - Mrs. I). R. Durisoe is visi' ing her son R. A. Tompkins, at Port Royal." - Rev. John Lake .paid a fly ?mr visit to our town last Sunday. - Miss Kate Shaffer of Marion is spending some time with her nephew Mr. W. J. Seth Butler. Again has Edgefleld to mourn the loss of one of her most prominent citizens. Dr. Seth Butler, after a pro tracted illness, died at his home in our town OP last Wednesday morning. Deceased came of an old and honored Edgefleld family, and was a quiet, un obtrusive law-abiding citizen. His most prominent characteristics were bis industry, attention to business, und devotion to his family. Deceased was buried in our "city of the dead" from the Baptist church, where Dr. Gwaltney preached the fu neral sermon. The sympathies of this community are extended to the strick en ones. Death of Mr. O. Barr. Mr. O. O. Barr, who lived about a mile from our town, died on last Sat urday afternoon after a brief illness. On Sunday afternoon his remains were laid away in our village cemete ry, his funeral having been preached at the Methodist church by his pastor, the Rev. M. M. Brabham. Oscar Barr was always genial and warmheated, and although the strug gle with disease and adverse fortune was often heavy and grievous, he never showed sign of weariness or ill-tem per. He had many friends because he "showed himself friendly." And in the home circle he was ever tender and thoughtful. His name was written in the books of the chnrch militant; may it also have been written on the everlasting records of the Church Triumphant! We hope and believe it was. g-a-gAMJiiiriiiimiimiiiviTTwart^Bi'nr-w-i Next County Interdenomina tional S. S.
