The opposition to the dispensary law is abating generally through out the State. "Sow oats and watch the Radi cals," is what the Hampton Guar dian advises. The State Fair will open in Co lumbia on Nov. 10th, and continue for four days. The railroads will give low rates. W. Waddey Thompson, who kill ed Editor P. E. There are now twelve daily pa pers in South Carolina, five morn ing and seven afternoon publica tions. The fool-killer is not doing his duty. The new naval dry dock at Port Royal will be completed within three weeks. The channel is being dredged out so as to admit our largest battle ships. Nine million bales is generally accepted as the cotton crop for this season, while the world's consump tion of American cotton can only reach 8,500,000 at the highest. Hon. Yates Atkinson, the newly elected Governor of Georgia, was inaugurated on last Saturday. Gov. Atkinson, like Gov. Tillman, has been the architect of his own fortunes. Hubbard, Price & Co. say the cotton market has touched the lowest price on record, and yet we are confronted with the fact that the supply seems to be growing larger rather than smaller. The Bamberg Herald says : The action of the Supreme Court in declaring the dispensary law con stitutional has about driven the last remains of the blind tiger business out of Bamberg. Constable McClendon was tried at Darlington last week for the j killing of Redmond in the Darling ton riot, and acquitted. Tho cases for shooting into the train were thrown out by the grand jury. Cothran, ol Abbeville, al our depot ; and found him one of the fairest men we have ever met. Judge Cothran is a thoroughbred South Carolinian, and a man, too, whom our people love and honor. He voluntarily resigned two of the highest offices in the gift of his people; and dur ing the political excitement that has wrecked our State the past four years, has done naught to fan the Hames of the factional animosity ; and neither has he denounced the administration, or advocated re bellion against our laws. Jn speak ing of the political situation, Judge Cothran said that hs believed agi tation teuded to improve and purify publ ic affairs ; that for four days he had been arguing a mill pond case down in Union, and knew all about stagnant water. And he was much opposed to stag , nation in politics as be was in mill ponds. Judge Cothran then went on to. say that he believed a man could support the Alliance de mands and be as good a Democrat as if be stood upon the Chicago platform with both feet ; that this is a free country, and every voter has the right to think as his judg ment dictates ; but it is demanded of him to support the nominees of his party when they are made. Judge Cothran then went on to say the Democratic party would be a most tyrannical organization if it required a man to think just as certain leaders dictated, and he was denied the freedom of his own opinion. But, of course, when our party meets in convention, and formulates a platform and set of rinciples, it then becomes the duty of every member to yield obedience to those principles, and support the nominees, whether they suit his views or not. The Dispensary and the Courts. Charleston Evening Post. The acquittal of McLendou is not a surprise. It is nothing more than frequently occurs in our courts without exacting comment. The fact that it was a dispensary case has brought a great deal of prejudice into the consideration of it. It is a hard thing at any time to convict a mau of even man slaughter, and this case simply fol lows the general rule and the ver dict arrived at is not unusual or strauge. The conviction of Bladon in Spartanburg was a surprise. It did not follow the usual course of events at all, and there must have been a wide difference somewhere iu the two cases or in the juries that considered them. There is one point for us all to consider, and that is the absolute necessity for upholding the courts of the country in both of these cases. The courts of South Caro lina need the support of good hon est citizens very badly. They have been brought into grievous disre pute, and the general feeling of unrest is growing stronger and stronger. With contempt of court comes contempt of law and order, anarchy and the thousand and one ills that governments are heir to. j The verdicts of these courts must be accepted as right and sustained If we expect Bladon to be punish ed we must expect McLendon and Cain to go free. It may be true that politics has had a great deal to do with both cases. That is our misfortune just now. TO We Offers Remedy Which, Used as Directed, Insures Safety to Life of Mother And Child.
