Edenfield Advertiser niOS. J. ADAMS,.EDITOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 1G, 1894. Congress has been in session six months and nothing done. Sixty new military companies have been commissioned since the Darlington riot. The Supreme Court has given us prohibition in this State, but we have no means to enforce it. Pro hibitionists now seize the shadow and fold it to their bosoms, but the substance flies. Dr. S. B. Jones to-day, Monday, tendered his resignation as presi dent of the Columbia Female College to take effect at the close of the present session. Failing health is the cause. Ex-Senator Edmunds, of Ver mont, says "Speaker Crisp is the logical candidate of the Democrat for Piesident in '96.'" Mr. Ed munds thought Mr. Carlisle was the logical candidate in 1S92. The Supreme Court on Tuesday last decided unauimously that South Carolina was according to the law and constitution, a pro hibition State. But according to blockaders and blind tigers we don't know whether it is or not. Ex. The Coxeyite sympathizers in Colorado are go?ng for Senator "Wolcott. In one of their meetings they declared that Judas Iscariot anr??Benedict-Arnold consolidated woi idn't be a circumstance to him for downright cussedness. They woundup by buming him in effigy, from which we conclude that they are inclined to make it hot for him. . George Washington Murray, who represents the 7th district in Con gress, and who is the only negro representative from this State, has invented a cotton chopping ma chine and has sold the right toa manufacturing syndicate at Waco, Texas, making big money on it. He has three patents and gets $5,000 for each one, and $5.00 roy alty on each machine manufac tured for the next seventeen years. Murray is a greater success as an inventor than as a Congressman. During the discussion of the military appropriationbL pointed by the United States gov ernment at the military and mechanical institutions should not be entitled to any compensa tion for quarters, etc. He called attention to the injustice to the smaller iustitutions in the South and West, citing Clemson college in his own State. The provisions was defeated and the matter al lowed to remain as before-Wash. Cor in Columbia Register. The following is from the Cotton .Plant, the organ of the State Alli ance. What it says is true and ought to put the Reformers to thinking: "A selfish, intolerant spirit has done more to break down eva ry re form movement that has ever start ed than any other one thing. This spirit is especially manifested when success has crowned the efforts of the reformers and a party placed in power that will ' carry out their wishes. Then it is time that late-comers and bounty jumpers push their way to the front and by loud clamor attempt to force everybody to travel in a narrow groove, that they mark out. The originators of the movement are set aside and the reforms are forgotten and effort is only direct ed towards keeping and getting the offices. One of our exchanges gives tho liquor situation in the following: Within seven months the Su preme Court has decided that the dispensary law : 1st was a law to regulate the sale of liquor and not for reveaue and therefore constitutional. 2d That it was a law to raise revenue and not to regulate and therefore unconstitutional. 3rd That there was no law making the sale of whiskey unlaw ful. 4th That it is unlawful to sell whiskey. You can take your choice. The decision is kaleidoscopic. The most eminent lawyrrs place dif ferent constructions upon it. There never was a decision rendered by a Trial Justice upon which so many plausible views could be enter tained. THE CAMPAIGN MEETINGS. The State Executive Commit leo ?of the Democratic partv will Loki a meeting on the 7th of June. The first campaign meeting will be held about ten days thereafter, and from this first meeting on to THOS. J. ADAMS, PROPRIETOR. EDGEFIELD, S. C., THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1893. _ - r-? ----- 4> VOL.
