The "sociable" at the Werte Hotel, last.-Friday night, was an eij?yab?e affairi A large portion of the beau ty and intelligence of the town was present. Mr. P. N. Lott, in attempting, few days ago, to shoot a chicken, shat tered ti ve panes in a window belong ing to the upper story of a neighbor ing house. Some of Mr. Lott's friends maintain that the fowl was oa th? ground when the shot was made, but Mr. Lott claims that it waa "on 1 hf wing." This reminds us of a feat of mai ksinanehip performed, some time 6ince, by Mr. B. F. Lewis. Mr. Lew is got the chicken that he wished about six feet from the test of the covey, discharged his gun, and killed three of the chickens in the covey. In speaking, at the Biptist Church, of the character of Mr. J. A. Clark, who died a week or two ego, Mr. Hundley said : " No man ia faultless : but Brother Clark's character was as pure and untarnished as human char acter can be." In conversation, Dr. Timmerman said : " The chief aim of ) his life was to do good." Theseatate ments express the highest euloginms that can be pronounced upon ' ? bu nion being; and we believe that they do not contain a tittled exaggeration. " In faith and hope the world will disa gree, But ail mankind's concern is charity. All must be false who thwart this one great end, And all of God who bless mankind or | mend." _J. P. B.
