The purport of Mr. Tillman's resolution is that the original owners of the lands shal] be allowed for a period of six months af ter.lhe passage of the resolution to re gain possession of the .'proper ties by pay ing the taxes for which confiscation was had. If this not done the lands are to be sold and the proceeds are to be applied to the support of free public schools in thc Parishes of St. Luke and .St. Helena, in Beaufort County. (3.) Bill appropriating $35,000, to im prove the navigation of Edisto River. Mr. Tillman will shortly introduce a bili nuking'an-fappropriation'for the im provement of-the Big Salkehatchie. He secured the examination of this river as weil of the Edisto last year, and an ap propriation'^would [have^been made by the last Congress but that the report ol the enginer corps, on which only can such an appropriation be obtained, came aftei the river and harbor bill had been re ported to the House by the committee on commerce. The examination of the North Edisto will be urced^with^a view to its fu ture improvement.-Monitor. The Greenwood and Augusta. The Chronicle has always predicted that t!ie Augus.'a and Knoxville Kailroaa would prove to be a paying investment, and the result has already justified the prediction. The road is ut present, doing a better local business than any road ter minating at Augusta, and this busineis bids fair to increase rapidly. The Au gusta and Knoxville extends through a very fertile section of country, and will bring a large amount of produce to Au gusta, lt us very important that soon action should Le taken at once looking ts the. early completion of the Savannah Valley and Atlantic and French Broad Railroads in the interest of Augusta With these roads part and parcel of Int Augusta and Knoxville, the latter will be a large feeder to the trade of this city, making the most productive section ol South Carolina tributary to Augusta. Fifty thousand dollars will secure both thess roads. We understand that the Richmond and Danville Railroad is very anxious to ob tain control of the Augusta and Knoxville. Jt is said that a square bill was made a few days since by parties in the interest of the Richmond and Danville to the State of South C?rolina,'.for its stock in the An gusta and Knoxville, and that the bid was refused.-Augusta Chronicle. THE BENEFITS OF THE STOCK LAW. A member of the Methodist. Conference, stationed in the iuterior of a County where the Stock law is not in force, and, in fact, has been exempted from its opera tions by the general law, complained to us^that country^butter was^so^seidom of fered for sale there that almost every fam ily depended upon buying Goshen Butter at 33 and 4u cents per pound. He made glad the heart of his wife by taking to her a,large bucket of as hne.cou.ntry but ter as ever tickled the palate of an epi. cure; and it was madelin this'; stock law County of Union, too* where butler is plentiful at '.'rom 1"? to 20 cents a pound Good c?utter is more plentiful here than it was whenjeows had to hunt their own food; and, as a rule, the beef is rnuchjbet ter, while neither has increased in price. It is said that the task of splitting the Southern StateB politically has been entrusted to Mahone.
