Two Little Pairs of Boots. Two little }-airs of Cojts, to-night, Before tho fire arc drying, Two littlo pairs of tired feet In a trundle bed aro lying ; The trccks they left upon the door Make me feul much like sighing. Those little boots, with copper toes, They run the livelong day ! And oftentimes I almost wish Tb nt they wcro miles away So tired I mn to hear so oft Their heavy tramp ot pliy. They walk about the now-plowed ground, Where mud in plenty lies They roll it up in marbles round And bake it into piei - And then at night upoa thc floor In every shape it dries. To day I waj disposed to icotd ; But when I look to-ni?ht At those little boots before the fire, With copper toes so bright, I ?Link how sad my heart would be To put them out of sight For, in truth, up stairs, I've laid Two s.<cks.of whito and bluo ; If called to put those boots away, 0, God, what should I dor I mourn that thurn are not to night Three pairs instead of two. I mourn, because I thought how nice My neighbor " 'cross the way" Could keep her carpets all tho year Fr>m getting worn or gray ; Yet, weil I kno.v she'd ?rui'.e to own Some iillle boots to-day. Wo mothers woary get and worn, Over our load of caro lut how wo speak of little onos Let oach of us bowarc For what would our fire sides bs to-night Ii" no little boots were tbcro ? A Common Mistake. A few days since, a sermon was preach cd in D-, from the text: " Inasmucl as ye havo done it unto one of the 1 <n these, ye have done it unto me." Tin preacher set forth that Christ Jesu?. Lord, is represented in all His disciple That if a man strike a disciple, the Lo feels the blow. That if injustice mak even thc humblest christian veep, teai of sorrow course down the Saviour's face G:i the other hand, that whatever kin ness U bestowed on a disciple is all tl sttnc M if bestowed directly upon th Lord Himself. Assuming this to bc i doctrine ol'the text, tito- preacher exhort his hearers to visit thc poor in thc spi vt' liberality and kindness that would at tuate them, as if it were the Saviour w received the benefactions in person. After the service was closed, a gent! man, whose liberality is known in all th churches, remarked : " A few days since, J carried to a poo christian woman a comforter, warm, b weil worn, and two loaves of bread good bread-but a little stale. Th weather was very cold, and the comforter was gratefully received. The poor w man was hungry, and thc bread was bc ter than she usually obtained. But, whi listening to the seamon to-day, I thoug that had I reflected that it was Jesus was visiting, in the person of one of h disciples, 1 would have taken a new com forter and fresh loaves of bread." The remark is worthy of remembrance by Christians, when about to go on au errand of mercy, or perform a deed ol good will to man. When the wise men came from the East to visit the new born Lord of th universe, they brought gold, frankincense and myrrh-rich and costly gifts Now we cannot visit the holy manger ; w cannot pour costly ointment upon oui Saviour's head ; but God has placed it i our Dower to perform services equally acceptable to Him. ile; sits in many lonely hut with the ch'ldren of misfor tune and misory; and all our visits ti Him there, and all our benefactions', will be recorded upori His huly heart, and thc record .will be imperishable. On the other hand, if any man hope to secure the favor of God by profession of personal piety, while he is guilty ol acts of cruelty, injustice or neglect even though the pe. jns suffering thereby may be the least of all human creatures Jet him read the concluding passages o the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew. He will find the grandest and the most for cible exposition of the nature, necessity and importance of practical religion ever recorded in any book. A Good Story. They tell a good story of how the Rev. Dr. Bethune-now dead-a wit, a scholar and an eloquent divine-was once put in a queer position by an intimate friend. The doctor at the time was settled over a congregation in Brooklyn, and was very popular. A Connecticut congregation gave him a call, and " called" a thousand doll ars per annum better than thc Brook lyn people. But he had formed a strong attachment to his parishoners, and, think ing that his sphere of service could not be changed to advantage, he was not tempted by an increase of salary. -So he remained, to the great delight of hi.-, people. All of the doctor's parishioners were not saints. There were a few sinner among them-else why preach the gos pel ? And among the last was a jovial pew holder, fond of lush, and apt at all times to get more than he could conve niently carry. Neither was he partic'ar Ht what time of the day he got drunk He suited his inclination, and had no method in his cups. Bilkins-well, that was not his name, but it will do-Bilkins heard of the doc tor's refusal, and he was delighted. In the very height of his pleasure he crossed r ulton Ferry, carrying about a quart of brandy. Dr. Bethuue crossed in the same boat, carrying an umbrella. The brandy carrier happened to catch sight of the umbrella carrier, and at- once staggered towards him exclaiming in his loudest tones : " How do you do, Dr. Bethune 1 Let me take your-hie-hand, my dear sir-r r-r ! I am proud to testify-yi- y? my respect for you sir." "Speak a little lower, if yon please, Mr. Bilkins," murmured Dr. Bethune. " Ye?-s-s-s, sir ! you've stood by our pulpit like a man. Them cussed nutmeg grinding, ham-carving Yankees-wanted to take you away from us-offered you a th'?usand dol?ais a year more-did they?" By this time the attention of the crowd was fixed on the couple. Dr. Bethune's face was always florid, but it was now on fire. His interlocutor continued: " Our pei pie hive got to make up that thousand dollars-got to! If they don't I'll do it myeolf. S-s-seee if I don't?" to del qu " But, my clear sir," remonstrated the docto;-, sollo voce, " speak a little lower. You arc drawing-" "Yes-ss," interrupted the other, "1 know what you said. You spumed the offer. You s-s-said you wouldn't go not an inch. Yon told them, as a good and pious clergyman ought to, that you'd s-ssee 'em d-d first." Your Home Paper. The Cleveland Herald very justly says : lt matters not how many newspapers a man takes, his list is incomplete with out his home paper. Every citizen who wishes well for his locality should give a generous support to his home paper. If the paper is not just such ns he would wish it, he should feel that himself and neighbors are responsible in a measure for its short comings. Give a paper a liberal support, an ac: i ve sympathy, and it at Once responds to such manifestation::. Let an Editor feel that his efforts are ap preciated and he is the most responsible being on earth ; his paper a part of him self, he is as sensitive to censure or praise as a doting father. Nothing can 'supply the place of thc .home paper. It is thc mirror in which the town and neighborhood news is re flected ; in thc social, political and reli gious circles where printed, it fiils the place which ne other paper can. When a need for economy compels the curtail ment of your newspaper list, strike oil' every other one, before you say to the publisher of your home journal, " stop my paper," The man who does not read the adver tisements in his home paper, can never be said to be well posted. Thc adver tisements indicate not only the business enterprise of the place in which they are pubiished, but the enterprise of the ad vertiser. When you see a man who ad vertises liberally, you may be certain of j finding a new stock of goods in his ston that he keeps up the market, and sells cheaper than those who do not advertise. If you want good bargains always pat ronize those who avail themselves of the advantages afforded through the adverti sing columns in the home paper. -? ? SOCIAL EXTRAVAGANCE-TUE HOME CIR CLE.-The Journal of Commerce is read ing a lecture to a good many people who, it is certain, live beyond their means, and are thereby preparing the way to bankrupt cy and ruin. The editor calls on all such to modpiate, and thinks wives and daugh ters coi'ld, if they only would, make a good beginning: " lt rests with the wife and children, oftentimes," we are told, " to initiate such a reform as is needed. The head of the family cannot find it in his heart to deny ihose around aim that which he thinks essential to their comfort, and he will not a>k them to save him. They must move in thc matter themselves. How many of our fair readers, whose eyes would glisten with tears at the bare thought of j any trouble to one so kind to them, have ewr asked themselves in earnest whether they were not personally responsible for overtaxing the means of their provider? lt is a good time lo ask that question now. Business -.refits are not large; financial affairs are unsettled ; the future is not altogether radiant with promise ; he deepest purse has been a little drained, and some of thc shallower ones are run ning low. If exhausted .there may come something worse than insolvency or hon est beggary. The temptation to fraud and defalcation is very great in thes* limes, and the spendthrift stands in the thickest of the assault. There is a voice mightier than ours calling to all in the home circle for their aid in this emergen cy, and we trust that many will listen to their profit." PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY M.
