Effects of Northern Abolitionism. . In the Senate, on Thursday last, a mcrmo rial was presentcd from the corporate authe rities of Georgetown, " praying Congress to take some-step to relieve that city of the free negro population.' The District being under the peculiar guardianship of Congress, no-re lief in the premises can be obtained, except ing by the action of the people's representa tives. Connenting upon this proceeding, the Baltimore Clipper says: " The memorial expresses, we believe, the universal sentiment of the Southern States, and of some of the free States also, as is in dicated by their legislati(n fo(rbiddiig free persons of color to enter their borders. This feeling has been prodnced by the action of the abolitionists, a:d will coniinue to increase until that class of people shall be excluded frot the Southern States. This result we consider as inevitable. The mobocratic dis position exhibited by the free negroes of Boston, their open deliance of the law : and the Cneour:agementi which they received from a degraded portion of the white popuilation, have tended to strungthen the disposition to expel them from States where their rapid in. crease may endanger public tranquility, and perhaps lead to their extermination. The re lations existing ktween these people and the white popidation might have remained undis turbed for years to come, had it not been for the oliciotis interference of the aboli:ioni.,ts. By their direct eliorts to deprive slaveholders -f their property, and their inflammatory ap peals to the colored popiation of the South -their protection of fugitive slaves, and en couragemnent to both slave and free to resist the laws of the country, they have produced an excitingr state of fceliig, which will render it impossible for free persons of color to re tain their present position in Southern coni iunities. However this condition of things ;ay be regretted, it has been foreed upon the - South by the pretended friendship of North crn1 fanatics for theSonrhtern -race. The movement for the removal of the free colored people will become general; and should all the free States follow the example of Indiana and Iowa, in denving admission to these peo ple on their removal from the South, they will be reduced to the necessity of seekintg the colonies in Africa for homes and safety." A HEDnEV WITHOUT GUILE.-The atten tion of the world is always caught bv militiry deeds, and a nation's gntitude is fily be stowed on the soldier. But it should notbe forgotten that the civilian is as useful. patri otic, and meritorious as the soldier. Robert Morris is comparatively unknown, Yet he sacrificed a prineely fortune for the cause of American liberty. I-I epledged his credit :ind wealth, and raised the means to clotlie, feed and arm the troops. The battle of Trenton, the campaign in Delaware and the Jerseys, ivfd never have oceurred but for his means. Another individual, who assisted his adop ted country with his fortune, was Mr. Have Solomon, a Polish Jew, of Philadelphia. His heirs have now a claim before Congross, for the payment in part of the sums advanced by him for the actual maintenance of the iem bers of Congress. At the time of his death, lie held $353,729 against the Confederacy. The letters of Madison and other eminent men are filed as vouchers of those loans, and of the generosity of the man wvho refused any remiuneration, except the return of the princi pal. The books of the Bank of North Ameri c-t show thte receipts by Robert Morris from ilayne Solomon of $200,000 in cash. It is certainly otie of the strong~est'elaims ever presented to 'the justice of the nation. A ComIecTLr DEMoen.AT.-John MI. Niles, the late senator from Connecticut, hats conme out inyiolent opposition to the Fugitive slave aw'Tisgentiomhan it will be recollected, was for ma~ny years the v-ery head and front of. the Democracy of this State. The Lowvell American says: [Ion. John M. Nik-s, late setnator fronm'Cotnnecticut, and formerly P'ost-~ master General under MIr. Van Buren, holds the following bold and matnly languauge in ref crenice to the Fugritive slave law: "This har is not only a palpable and dan gerous violation of the Constitution, but is equally subversive of all thme great principles of liberty, which a free pecople should cherish. The duty' of the people itn respect to an un constitutional and oppressive law, must at ways be in some mteasure a (question of ex pediency, depending on the circumstances of the case. WVhen dangecr is innincnt, and re dres cannot be houped jor in any other way, re sistance by force is not mdly juslIiable but a duly." This looks a little like an invitamtion to proceedings similar to those in Bloston. PRODAntY F.t RENeoLTfEni.-We re gret to learn, that on Sunday Evening laLst, at or near the residence oi'John ]Beamn in this District, (in thme neighborhood of Fish Dam,) a difficulty of a serious chara.cter oc curred between 31r. Ellege II. Limid and an Irishman named Gage. A SENslBLE FiniE NEa no.--The Mobile Advertiser says: Weare informed by a getitle man of this city that lie was applied to by a free boy yesterday, t o buy himw. Thel boy urged the case strongly, stating that lie was tired and sick of free negro liberty, aind that lie wanted a master-preferred to become 'a slave. 'As situated now, wthen lie got sick no otne cared for him, lie was nowvhere in society, was free only ini name, and wvas de terined to be a slave ini fact. Was willingr to be put on the block and sold, if that wvould make thte sale legal. Ihere is a cud for the abolitionists to chew. THEt LEGIsLATUnEi of N. Carolina, which adjourned on the 20th ult. passed over three hundred acts amid resolutions, incorporated thirteenm plank road companies, eight turnpike comnpanes, three railroads, four umanufact tir ing conmpanlies. one canal two new Banmks, four Savings Institutions, and six male and three female acadeumies, and inceased thle Baiikiing etapital of the Sate $1,100,000.
