?r 'US ? - OCAL MATTERS. Spo'itil Sthool t)Ulilc| Wo urge upon every icyal voter in ; this tow- ship tin; necessity ot their being present at the Special School district Meeting, to he holden to-iuorrow, tor llu; purpose ol "uting a special tax for the maintenance of the puh. lie. schools in tliis School District. We believe the phrase %ievery Uynt voter" includes every body, except tux paying women, and women who have to stay at home and work whilst their litis-' hands go out to street gal) and muddle in politics. Leaving this divergence, let us now come to the point. it is the duly ot every tax-payer wlio is entitled to a leual vote, to he present :it I his meeting. \\ o are all charged vih a responsibility. This n^ponaibility, as well as our <lut.v to ourselves, our families, ami the rising '1 1 I generation, require that all other considerations should he laid aside, and all attend this meeting. And further, it is our dut y to vote' a competent fund fer the maintenance ot the public Schools. We should sec to it, that tin vising g'meration are so educated that we may at least be allured with the hope that they may attrin that liberty under government that we have sought, but not. found. Vet, we must view duty in e\nry respect ; to blindly vote a tax thu^vill he burdensome to the tax payer, will ho a greater evil than a levy inadequate to the purpose. it is therefore as clearly the duty ot every person interested in education,, previous to voting on the tax levy, to make the inquiry, as it is that ot the Trustees 10 inlonn taxpayers, not only now tn vny, but the name of each child iu every Kttb-^chool division in their j District. Without this information, it will be impossible for the meeting.to ill rive at a proper estimate of the j amount necessary to be raised, ami it \\ ill be far better to make no levy at fill, than to levy a tax, dmply because we are tol<l it ijiiwt lie done. ?/> % ? - ? -i ho-.o!2:-ja > : si-o.ji-s: ur.r.rx: This is about as. near as types e.tn he made to convey an idea of the xogQU> sonorous, car-aching voice of (,'il bert Gibson, the; crier of lresh 1 eef in the market. Though dolefully harsh, and the sound ol even a cow bell, used as a market signal, would be much more pleasant ; yet, it is not unfrequently the case, that the voire ot (lil bert, crying bis frcdr beet, is a quite welcome sound ; but, oecasiynally\ even Gilbert limpi over a surplus quantity of beef, too hastily killed to be marketable. On last Monday morning, a valuable mih'h cow was maliciously shot and killed by some person, or persons, ill our town. On examination, the cow w is ascertained to be the property of Mr. Timothy Cooper, an aged, honored, and respected citizen, in moderate cirstanees, who is now prostrate on his las., bed of illness. The ease is a hard one, and although it may have been vexatious to the persons who did the deed to have their crop destroyed, yet they would do well to recollect, that if thejr fences are not sufficient to protect their crops, they have no right to maliciously injure, maun and destroy | other inople's property We hope the ; party who did the act will acknowledge the fault, and pay the value of the property destroyed. If this is not done, then it becomes the duty of every citizen, in sell defence, to see to it, that the law is rigidly enforced. Waccamaw untl L. ttlo River Canal. Wo learn from Mr. Walsh, who returned o^ulast Saturday from a visit to Juttlc KW er, that through the energy of th'e directors of the Waccamaw and Little Kiver Canal Company, who reside at Little Kiver, tlie route, or way lor the canal, has been surveyed by a corps of competent engineers, who find a fall of thirteen feet of water from the Waccamaw to the village of Little Kiver, a distance of about six miles C but, i\y a more circuitous route, a fall | of sixteen feet can he had. It is thought that the director* will , choose an intermediate route* between ' the two lines of survey, which would ; give a about fourteen feet; tf?in is' Ample and wullioicnt for all practical manufacturing purposes, and wo have no doubt but when this immense water power is brought to serve the in torests of ma nil fact live and comir. rcc, fti* it surely will be; things will not be M w soaryjpt Little River, ns they now are ' Snlu of Utile IMvcr I'rojierty. r- ' We learn that, at the sale of the assigned estate of T.
