A tower on the Constitution building was struck by lightning and bricks scattered for many yards oer the street in front of the structure. The force of the wind uprooted trees in many parts of the city and scattered limbs across wires, temporarily paralyzing the tele phone and lighting services. Plate glass windows in; several down town store buildings were broken while the heavy downpour 1 flooded the basements of Wesley Memorial Methodist church and a 1 store building causing considerable ' damage. js The telegraph companies report- j' ed their lines practically unim paired. Fox and Jesse Gappins were electrocuted, at the penitentiary ^ Friday morning snortiy alter t> o'clock for the murder of Wm. Bra zell, Columbia taxi driver, near t Leesville on the night of August 7 last. The trio went to their deaths singing and praying. Kirby went t( first. He feigned insanity and tried ^ to get his hands from the straps. The officers told him he had better take it easy, but a second time he ? +l*A SlippeU Xlld Iiaauo xxv/iijl .ww ouopo* Ihen four guards took hold of him forcibly; the straps were made tighter than usual, and the current vas sent through his body, the man being deprived, because of contrary behavior, of the privilege of making i last statement. Gappins went sec jnd and Fox last the entire proce dure consuming 40 minutes Fox and Gappins made last statements in which they warned young men igainst bad4company and evil con iuct. The penitentiary officials took the rurious by surprise and staged the ixecutions at an early hour instead )f noon, as is usual. This is the first ime a white man has he en executed n this state since 1913, and it is the irst time three men were ever jlectrocuted in the state the same lay. The three men were convicted Septembr 14, 1921 of the murder of Wm. Brazell, a young taxi driver of Columbia. They were first sentenced a die October 21, but appeals, tvhich were never perfected caused postponement of the date and made resentencing necessary. The murder which was respited - -Li.- J J ;nis morning was commit tea auruig the night of August 7, 1921. The trio engaged the young man to take them to Lexington to "see some jirls." When they got 15 miles from Columbia they .blackjacked the young driver, their aim being to :ake his car and sell it in Florida, rhe blackjack broke and they stab jed him to death to get.away with ;heir plan, according to their con fessions.
