OODE AND BEARD WERE THE HEROES "Dode" Phillips, . Erskine's star athlete, and Beard, the leading col ;lege port sid?r in .the state, closed the season for the Seceders in a 4 * ? - ? n.iA Wnuocfor. The final ' score was 5 to 4 the trowrtfng event coming at a time when every A. R. ;P. hat. and cap was in the air and every A. R. P. throat shrilling "Dode" did it!" . There may have been such a con test before or since that historic time when gloogn .descended upon lfddville but Dr. Charlie Cowan and Bam Pressly, both, o.f whom remem ber when R. S. Galloway, Sr., used to catch 'em barehanded acted as if they didn't believe it. And the Rev. Nat Smith, who occupied a seat of vantage high up on the grandstand above (but near) the college girls, recalled the old days of Billy Moore, Sam and Lum Brice, "Dunx" Press * T 1 * TT a. 1..X 1.KJ ' ly ami jonn Lress nmiwi, uuv u?u w eknowledge that it was absolutely perpendicular to anything that he %ad ever witnessed on a hall ground. Conquerors and conquered both agreed that it was the most exciting and noisiest contest that ever dis torted the usual peacefulness and (eaceableness of Due West. It was! a cracker-jack from the first to the last ball thrown because the first man up for Clemson hit the first boll thrown for a clean single, and the, hair-raising stunts kept up until Hie first sphere was pitched in the last half of the ninth when Phillips literally got under it and lifted it majestically to the roof of a house far beyond the jurisdiction of left field. From the Beginning No one recalls now just when the first scores were made, due to the1 burst of boisterousness in the last frame, but it is remembered by most of the spectators that some time daring: the first part of the battle Erskine scored two runs. A little later, and it was not so very long the Seceder rooters thought, the cadets- succeeding in getting across ?ne. That made the count two to John 1 Wanan says: "If the. ness on earth should leave s it is advertising Arlvpi+icinor which creates s business. Th to increase adv ing what aire times. There followed a succession of fast putouts for an inning or so and Erskine made one more, making the fracas what some thought a safe lead of 3 to 1. But it was in the eighth (nearly everybody, including EJrskine's shortstop ?who unhappily came in contact with- a large quan tity, of ether remembers it was the eighth) when Clemson made TWO VERY. LARGE TALLIES?and .the score was tied The first half of the awful ninth came and the soliders made another thus winning the game for the large bunch of rooters who almost pierced the black clouds with 'their shrieks, but they reckoned without Buck Pressly and his star southpaw. Henry had pitched a good game, but his arm was going back on him and he retired, in favor of Beard, leav ing a man on third. The next cadet up hit a foul or two and then singled through second, scoring. But Beard had nothing else to give them. Score: 4 to 3. In the last half of the ninth Beard always a safe hitter, knocked a clean single to right and was safe on first. He stole second?and someone predicted the Due West train would certainly run off the track on the way back to Donalds because the engineer, fireman and conductor WAS there. He stole third, Beard did. Somebody else just knew the train NEVER would start back. The next man (the Due West fans were so excited they couldn't tell a stranger his name) laid down a per fect bunt and Beard came home, makig the score 4 and 4. ?oder x After that "Dode!" Davis, the diminutive left-hander for Clemson who had pitched a great game, evi dently had been misinformed as to the kind of ball "Dode" could get under. Anyhow, he sent him one /ust about the knees?and a tin roof on a residence far beyond the left field resounded with 'the whack which spelled victory for Erskine and knocked the box score into a jumble of figures.?Index-Journal.
