I Ul'CfcXlYlilC, ureeuwwu au\x uj?uv?.. burg to move Erskine College from ito "sacred seat" or "site" and re- ^ locate it in Abbeville, Greenwood or :Spartanburg. Due West feels the security of tradition. But it is not unusual for colleges to be moved. Lander College was moved from Williamston to Greenwood. Bailey Military Institute was moved from Edgefield * to Greenwood. Both "these institu- tions are flourishing and the trans- 1 planting process was of immense value in stimulating growth in the fertile Greenwood soil. Chicora Col / lege was moved from Greenville to J Columbia. Columbia Female College was moved from its location in Co- i lumbia to a site outside the city limits. The Citadel is soon to be moved from the historic tobacco market site in Charleston to a larger and I better location outside the city. Citadel Square will soon be only a 3 name &q be preserved. Johs Hopkins University was moved some years ago from its original site in Baltimore to a larger eampus outside the city. Richmond College is now in process of moving. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary founded in Greenville was moved to Louisville many years agoi and has grown wonderfully since that time and now is preparing to sell its property in the city and move to another location just outside the citj. Evidence might be multiplied but[ what's the use to pile Pelion on Osse? The thing has been done and can be done again. In this week's issue of the Press i and Banner, Judge William Pinkney Greene, as Major Hemphill affection Iately and appropiately calls him, forj he has proven that he is judge of | high ability and is a distinct ornament to the bench in every way rather yields to the temptation to display1 impatience with the idea that location has anything to do with the success of a college. What a college needs be says, is the "ambrosial cash" to "grease the machinery with," words which beine interpreted mean that I drives which have just passed over u with almost cyclonic effect. Thes< are to provide cash. The value of Erskine College t< any community would be great. T< Greenwood it would be worth mori than the quarter of a million whicl Judge Greene has proposed on th< part of Abbeville. Greenwood doe: not propose to jump in and raise, th< term being readily understood it Abbeville, but she is willing to offe a larger sum if any sum will influ enoe the authorities to conside % moving Erskine College from its pre ?ent location. ( A magnificent campus can be of fened here, there are several citizen! who are feverishly anxious to offei suitable sites of broad acres and al ,IR4U.
