ALL ABOUT GUNS. I The commonest injuries produ< I in war are gunshot wounds. Ui 50 years ago a soldier's musket c ried only about 835 feet; and t ' degree of efficiency had not b< exceeded for more than 200 yes i.e., from 1640 to 1859. In otl words, the wars of Louis XIV, struggles of the French Revoluti the Napoleonic wars, the Crim< war and our war of 1812 were fought with firearms which had effect at a distance greater than ? feet. In 1857, however, the smo< bore gun barrel was replaced by rifled barrel, and this change ca ed an immediate increase in the c rying distance to 2,000 feet. At time this result seemed to the wh world nothing ^hort of a mirac but as early as 1866, a French c cer, Chassepot by name, invente* rifle having a calibre of 15 millir tors, which carried 4,000 feet. T years before, this accomplishm would have seemed quite impossit On Nov. 4, 1867, the new Chasse; rifle was submitted to a practical t The French sent a detachment of n to occupy Rome and to hold it agai the advancement of Garibaldi. 1 effect of the new rifle in the enga ments was so remarkable that entire French army was immediat equipped with Chassepot. j The Chassepot rifle weighed n pounds, and the Gras rifle, which \ introduced in 1874, weighed nea as much, but it had a carrying < tance of 6, 000 feet. After rema ing the same for 217 years, the c rying distance of firearms was tl increased in 15 years by 5,165 fe At the same time the firearms of ~ ? ?J T*?H, Austrians, rrussians aim iu4iK were also greatly improved, and a peating rifile, firing 16 shots a m ute, and having a carrying distai of 9,000 feet, came into practical i The rifles in use today are mi lighter, are more easily handled t carry a distance of more fhan 12,( feet at the rate of 2,700 feet per s ond. The revolver was first int duced in 1850; since then it has a undergone great improvement, carrying distance, which at first a only about 100 feet, was increased 330 feet, then 680, and finally 4,( feet. In comparison with such means defense and offense, it is interest to call to mind the weapons of ancients. A javelin could be thro about 84 feet; the sling ordinal hurled its missile 266 feet, the ] learic sling-men being famous, h< ever, because they could hurl a st< 333 feet. The wooden bow was in until the middle of the 15th centu by means of it an arrow would be i pelled a distance of 265-330 f< while the steel crossbow, which ca into use later, carried from 330-,' 1 feet. The old blunderbuss of Pilgrims, which was supported oi fork, was effective for about i feet. The early musket carried ab 600 feet. This firearm was much proved, so that it could shoot a < tance of 835 feet, and this was best the world knew until 1857.
