The State. _ "That Little Contemptible Army ' * is the title of quite a stirring1 ballad of the present war which wis composed by Judge William Christie Ben- " el, former South Carolinian and Columbian. Judge Benet wrote the j words several months ago and the ^ State printed them; subsequently he composed the melody which was , rvranged by Goodwin Foster and pub- " lr'shed by a London music house, West & Co., 24 Rathbone Place, Ox- ^ lord street, London. The verses ^ have a good plain rhyme end the music, written in six-eight time, has i a swing and a martial spirit that . should make it popular as a marching tune for the allies. The verses run thus: The Kaiser ordered stout von Kluck: . "You must beat the British by hook or crook; Their cock-sure airs I can not brook, , That little contemptible arm^! Although they're led by General ' French 1 heir martial zeal you wi'i surely quench. In my royal nostrils they're a stench, That little contemptible army'" Von Kluck is every inch a man, ' I'll do." says he, '"the best 1 can." ' Y.'ith that a three weeks' fight, began With that little contemptible army. r' o the Kaiser then he made report, ''Unpleasant, sire, I'M make it short: For truth to tell we had poor sport With that little contemptible army. "We charged their line full three to one, And all that man could dare was done 1" i^ut, Dunder and Blitzen; thty won'*- a run, t That little contemptible army ^ We fought by day, we fought by night, ? ve charged and fought with all our might, ,nd found to our cost that they can fight? hat little contemptible armv. C., Oct. 8.?As evidence of the effective work being dona by the special constab'es sent to Charleston by Governor Manning f .1 the purpose of enforcing the liquor laws, it is noted with a great deal of interest here that the Charlucfrm Plnnntv Grand Jurv this week returned thirty-nine true bills out of forty indictments handed them by :he acting Solicitor, Wm H. Grimball, Erq. Judge M. L. Smith is presiding and his forceful, manly charg.-; to the Grand Jury on the question of law enforcement brought fo-th many complimentary remarks from law abiding citizens all over the state. Governor Manning is deeply gratified that the work he is attempting to do is beginning to bring forth ?uch good results. Law enforcement and good citizenship go hand in hand, MONEY TO LEND.
