Editor Press and Banner : Having concluded to take a days uting, a party of three of us from this lace, procured a comfortable carriage I'ith a good pair of well matched lorses and a careful driver, on last " 1hursday the Oth inst., and proceeded hrough the country by way of Caliouu\s Mill to jNIt. Oarmel, returning >y the upper route via Island Ford nd Warreuton. We found the crops of both corn and . otton, with here and there an excepion where the land is very sandy, beter than we had ever seen them at this ime of the year?especially the upand corn. We passed one field of corn which ttracted our special attention, not on ccount of its superbness, but of its iuimutiveness. It was suggested that t might be of the bumble bee variety, 8 a bee might utand on the ground nd suck the pollin from the top-most assel. We are not sure who it belongs to, ut it is possible that it is our friend A. Cheatham of this city, as we beieve he owns some land in that localy. Of course, he will disown it. We au only account for it upon thesuposition that the owner started out to ,-ork it on the Williamson plan, that i to stunt it, and then neglected to nstunt it by a liberal application of itrate of soda and other fertilizers, as tiat plan contemplates. When we reached Mt. Carmel we ound that the gypsis had about capjred the place, as they were' there in reat numbers with a perfect caravan f fiop-eared inules, spavined horses, 'omen and children ana every coneivable style of vehicle. Noticing a small collection of indi- f iduals in and around the school uilding, we learned, on enquiry, that , had been extensively advertised that lere would be a prohibition or auti ispensary rally in the town on that] ay ; that several prominent prohibion speakers had been invited to devej addresses, but for some reason r other the expected crowd had Dot jaterialized. Having the day before us we conluded to take in the speeches. So in ampany with some half dozen others ^repaired to the school house where tie exercises were to be held and on iaching there found about two dozen thers, including a few ladies and bildren. The meeting was presided over by aat dignified and venerable old genleman, Col. E. A: Mars, who introuced, as the first speaker the Rev. Ir. Best of McCormick. The gentleman is a Methodist divine ud of course, the greater part of his i ddress was made up of his personal J xperiences. He told places where he I ad pursued his calling, among which * 'as the mountain section of this State, 'here he had spent some three or four ears. We gathered from his address that e did not object to the dispensary er se, but to the quality of the liquors lrnished and the high prices at which aey were sold by that institution? antrasting the same, in both of these articulars, with that which could be ad from the ''moonshiners" of the loun tains. The next and only other speaker as the Rev. Dr. Moffatt, President of Irskine College. Dr. Moffatt is a leasant speaker, and seems to be loroughly impressed with the belief, jat if we could only get rid of the disensary we would have an ideal state f affairs in this county. He set out by stating that he would, > some extent, follow the practice o; is Methodist brethren, and recite >me of his personal experiences. He made the remarkab e statement aat he never saw a person under the ifiuence of whiskey until he was over fteen years of a^e, and then he had ) go away some fifteen miles from oine to see that one; that this person as a young man who bad drunk un1 he had delirium tremens; that seeur the nondition of this vouuer man ud hearing his awful futcries and ellings, he resolved then and there iat he would ever afterward abstain om strong drink and would fight it ith all the ability with which he light be endowed, which resolve he as persistently carried out. So you see, Mr. Editor, there is still great deal of truth in that old sayig that "it is an ill wind that blows obody good," for who can tell but lat if it had happened that instead of s being this extreme case of the evil jnsequenceg of strong drink as exhib,ed in the case of this young man who iw buakes and a ho9tof other hedioue features in his delerium, the doctor's rst experience had been with some of is fellow-students at Erskine College, 'ho bad gone out to Donalds where >me of the boys used to go to get a lite, and on their return were slightly Oder the exhileraiing effects of what ley had procured, the consequences rould have been altogether different, [ ud the cause of prohibition beeD I rinus one of its staunchest advocates, I ) say the least of it. a The doctor, like the speaker who I receeded hiaa, laid great stress upon 8 ie quality of the liquors dispensed I om the dispensaries and especially as 9 > the exorbitant prices at which the 1 ime was sold. This struck us a9 rather a lame argu- ?ent in favor of prohibition, as unoubtedly the higher the price at 'hich the stuff is sold, the ltss of it 'ill be drunk. Oid Cit. 'he State of South Carolina!
