Bowen. Addres^s appropriate to the occasion were aade by President Mell and Profesors Riggs, Morrison and Furman. Prof. Morrison's address was as foldws: Ir. President, fellow members of the faculty and young gentlemen of tbe nstitution:? I stand here for one single purpose o show respect for, and do honor to, o far as I may be able, the memory >{ our dead friend and official. Robert Elsi Bowen was born near Jeorge's Creek, Pickeus county, S. C\, Jept. 8, 1830. His parents were of Tish and Welsh descent, and came rom Virginia, and settled near the Sauda river, in the hill country of Caroina, very soon after the close of the \meri(tan Revolution. R. E. Bowen grew upon his father's arm, getting in the oomrnon schools >f the day a knowledge of the English >rauches, .and learning surveying 'rem bis father. He went on horseback to Texas in [853, and remained in that state about i year, teaching school five months, md spending the balance of the lime n traveling over the state. In the fall of 1854, he came back Liome and managed he father's farm for several years Ou the 15ih day of October, 1857, he married Miss Martha Oliver, of AnJerson, R. C., and a few months later the youug couple set up tbeir hous bold goods on the farm, which for almost half a century was their home of happiness. In November, 1861, R. E. Bowen sutered the Confederate army a firstlieuteDaut io the Second South Carolina regiment. By the close of the year 1863 he had risen to the rank of jolouel, in which capacity he served t. iil (lia Oih Hon nf A nri I 1 w hpn be surrendered with Lee at Appomattox. His few surving comrades all bear glad witness to bis unflinching jourage, aud bis unfailiug kindness to bis men, at all times. In one of the battles near Chattanooga Col. Bowen was wounded, aud was in consequence two months in the hospital and at home. In the battle of the Wilderness a 3anuon ball cut off part of his coat, without bodily iujnry. From Appomattox he rode his army borse home aud resumed bis work as a farmer. In 1872 he was chosen a member of the house of representatives, and two years later be was elected senator from bis native county. Col. Bowen took an active part in the great struggle for the preservation if "the civilization of the Cavalier and Puritan;" and in 1877 was appointed chairman of the special committee to nvestigate the frauds perpetrated by icalawags and carpet-baggers and tbeir legro associates during the dark days >f Reconstruction. The report of this ;ommittee is a most valuable contri)ution to the records of the history of >ur commonwelath. An incident, unpublished and given ne in a private conservation, illuerates the cool courage and devotion >f our departed friend. When Walace, speak r, and Mackey, speaker so tailed, were occupying chairs on the peaker's stand in the hall of the louse of representatives, when a >loody riot seemed imminent, when a lasty word, or blow, or shot might )recipitate slaughter in the state louse, and civil war outside Col. ioweu quietly walked from the seuite chamber and stood behind Col. Wallace's chair, towards which he mew if any shots were fired the ^ery irst would be directed. Calm and uunoved, as Regulus, the Roman, beore the mob at Carthage, he stood here until he heard Mackey say, in ow tones, to his so-called sergeant-atirms. "Ask Gen. Wallace to please vacate that chair; "but be sure not to ay your band on him." Assured then hat no fighting would follow, Col. Bowen)went back to his duties in the lenate. Co., and later a director and president of tbe Carolina, Cumberland Gap & Chicago Co. His efferts n this direction, like those of Robert if. Hayne, were unsuccessful. Mr. Clemson, in his will, named R. E. Bowen as one of the seven life trustees of our institution. Two of his lolleagues?both like him soldiers of the Southern Confederacy?"JD. K. Morris and J. E. Bradley, went before aim to tbe rest under the shade of the trees on the other side of the river. Col. Bowen was a Christian, and was for years an elder in the Presbyterian church near his birthplace and bis life-long home. About sunrise, In the home of a relitive at Fair Forest, Spartanburg ;ounty, Monday, Jan. 11, 19U9, he juietly fell asleep. When loved ones Event to wake him they found him in 3is bed, but sleeping "The sleep that knows not breaking. Morn of toil, nor night of waking" Viewing him in all life's relations, we are constrained to declare? "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him, rhat nature might stand up and say to all the world rhis was a man." Suffer me, in conclusion, to lay upon the fresh earth that covers his mortal remains a garland, gathered and wov jn by oue likewise born uear tbe Mountains, that guard tbe western joundarie of bis native state, who, too, reached his fourscore years; and who, like our lamented trustee, was a life;!me lover of forest and tield, and his 'ellow-man.
