The vai achievements in the world of medi and surgery are too numerous t cord; and there are so many that Wr been far-reaching iu their utility each of these would demand a Ion planation. A very interesting discovery ha? been made by experimenters in Itockefeller Institute for Medical search. Dr. Samuel J. Melf/.er, o the foremost men in the institute one whose life is given up to resei has found that Epsom halts or, as scientifically known, sulphate of: nesia, is a most valuable auestl either local or general. Tests were afterward made foi purpose of rendering insane pei tractable, aud were found perf successful, they being in no wa} jured. As the anesthesia was by i tion, only a comparatively weak tion was employed aud, cont-equei the patients were not made uo scious. In one experiment there was i markable case of local auestbesi ^ which a man afliicted with nect Tho fprrihlp and well-known bone ease, was able to look on at the o] ^ tion upon his leg, absolutely c'evo pain. After injection of a solt r twenty per cent, strong, surgeons able successfully to amputate a xt leg, the patient naturally being < pletely anesthetized. But this is not all that the discc ^ ers claim for this simple drug. confidently asserted that it wil generally used as a complete aud caciousantitoxin for tbedread tete or lockjaw. Experiments have made on a man afflicted with loci and all hope of saving him abando Yet his jaws parted after several ii f tions of sulphate of magnesta made, and he was soon able to food. Fertilizer trade was 80,000 tons short in lUtb Carolina first of March. It Is today (jnal to last year, but a larger proportion of irtlllzers are being used on grain this year ian ever belore. But notwithstanding all lis, there Is evidence of danger ahead for the II cotton grower. The chances are that we iay look for something to drop and fall on 3e all cotton planter and you had best stand om under danger. Cotton goods are now retailing at a price sat would, we are told, make It profitable to aln cotton at 15 cents, and yet the mills are ylng to reduce prices by bucking and ?bulngdown, which has caused producers of iw cotton to make calculations and serlomr consider the wisdom of manufacturing lelr raw cotton. There are many counties In the South now lat SDln from one to four times the amouDt [ cotton produced In tbelr respective counes. For illustration. I am told that Anderjd county, S#C., tbe tecond largest cotton roducing county In tbe Stale, spins about as tucb cotton as Is grown in tbe county. Now tbe limit to tbls brow beating and gal robbing of cotton growers Las been ?ached, and if those in charge of tbe mills III not spin, there are others that can build lore mills aod spin too.
