Oct. 22, 1907.?Special.? i The people of this city are greatly exi cited over a number of remarkable i cures wbioh have been effected by a wealthy philanthropist by the name ) of Cooper. His headquarters at The Public Drug Store is besieged with crowds of men and women eager to be cured of their ills. Cooper is a quiet, gentlemanly per1 son, with the appearance of a student, ' rather than a business man. He is apparently about thirty-one or two years 5 of age. He first came into public no> lice by his philanthropic work among i the poor. The large fortune he poe sesses has made it possible for him to distribute many wagon loads of food - and clothing among those in indigent > circumstances since his arrival In Chir cago. The first that was known of Cooper's power over disease was when Mr. John Stauber. of 1607 Broadway, Cincinn ati, Ohio, who was in this city on business, 1 declared that Cooper, the philanthro! piat, was the same person who saved - his life last March, after he had been ' given up to die by his phvsicians. Mr. 1 Stauber Btated that last March the doc* - tors had told him he would not live ' until May, as he was la a terrible con' dltlon: every one said he had con sumption ; he had a nasty cough, with r frequent hemorrhages, dizzy spells, ana was so weak that the least exertion or excitement would completely prostrate him ; there were severe pains in the stomach and baok, and his kidneys were in bad condition. ' "After my physicians gave me up," ; said Mr. Stauber, "Mr. Cooper heard of my case and called to see me. Hewlett 1 a peculiar medicine which I began tak ing a d I immt?diately began to im? 1 prove. My oough stopped, my stomach no longer distressed me, and my kidneva were in perfect condition. I i gained seventeen pounds in seven . weeks, and today I am as veil as I i ever was in my life." t A few days after this Mr. B. L. Sid, well, a justice of the peace living at i 3322 Dearborn street, reported mat Cooper bad cared bim of a severe case of stomach trouble with a few doses of bis peculiar medicine. His trouble bad been of long standing and be bad tried many different doctors and medicines without relief. | From the first dose of Cooper's medi, cine he began to improve, and is today in apparently perfect health. This was followed by the still more 1 remarkable cure of Mr. Thomas Webster, employed at the Omaha Packing Company, and living at 5210 South Morgan street. Mr. Webster bad suf; ferea for years with pain in his stomach, dizziness, palpitation of heart, backache, and all other troubles. He 1 came to Cooper's headquarters and dis1 played an enormous tapeworm, which ! be said had passed from bis system after be bad taken a few doses of the Cooper medicine. Mr. Webster said ill his suffering had left him as if by ' magic, and he felt like a new being. The report of these remarkable cures flew through the city like wild fire, a ad the Public Drug Store, where Cooper is making his headquarters, is besieged'by people suffering from all manner of ailments. Except Id summer time they are apt to be damp, foggy, chilly ana among the least desiraole hours of daylight, says Doctor Woods Hutch inson iu the American Magazine. It is quite true that during the summer i here is a sense of exhilaration about being abroad iu these early morning hours; but this evaporates with the dew and is apt to be succeedea by a orrenponding depression and loss of working power later in t e day. 1 have been observing my frieuds and patients for the pa*t twenty years, in this respect, and am inclined to the opiniou that not a little of the depression and uervousness which commonly develop in hot weather is due to excessive exposure to light, from habits of early rising, inherited from agi nnf-. r>nnnteracted nuuiLUiai auwovviw) mwV 1 by thre9 to four hours rest in darkened rooms in the middle of the day. i "Secondly, that the exhilaration experienced during the early morning hours on an expensive luxury which has to be paid for later in the day. Id fact, I nave found, that a general rule to put it very roughly, the business or professional man who rises an hour before 7.30 or 8, goes to bed, or ! loses his working power an hour and a half earlier in the evening. Each individual has in the beginning of his day about bo much working power stored up in his brain and muscle cells. In the meantime storfes of marvellous cures continue to pour in. Mrs. G. Fry, living at 18;s Oak street, Jias suffered agony for months from rheumatism. In telling about her case, she said: "I have had rheumatism for over nine years. It has been getting worse every year until I have been almost a cripple from it for the past eighteen months. I have been unable to write for over three years, as the knuokles of my hands were so swollen I could not olose my fingers enough to write. Every Joint In my body was In the same *\-| shape, swollen and intensely painful. , i The suffering has been too'great to describe. I have seen a doctor every w$ek for ten months and have tried in every way to gfet well, ' , ''Last week I came here and bought some of the Cooper medicines. 1 was told to come back in case I did not improve. Mrs. Fry here took the pencil and used it readily. "I told a neighbor who has rheumatism, / about it, and she said 'maybe it isn't tbe medicine; maybe it's something else.' I told her that until J knew what the something else was I should keep on taking the medicine and 1 advised her to do likewise." ' Js m Cooper claims to have received the '' .'3* formulas of the medicines he is using from an aged priest in a sleepy Spanish town In old Mexico. The Mexicans believed that holy water or some supernatural element entered into their composition. #|?| Cooper receives an enormous daily mail. Letters are coming from every part of the State, asking for advice. The philanthropist reads every letter carefully, and replies to each one, advising the remedy which is applicable to each individual case. While his remarkable cures are the chief topic of conversation, many stories are heard on the streets and in business places of his goodness to the poor. His gifts of food, money and clothing have relieved a great amount *Ti of distress, and have greatly endeared him to the people. He is beginning to show the great strain he has been under the past two weeks, and it is understood that he will remain here only one more week. a X? 4U? 1n(f^r noiif v 355 LLI1UU UUU UUUjr lu mo muci paiv vt tba day, or at night, tbeo be muat rise later to get it.
