J. Reynolds T( h annual dinner.Abbeville Lodge Ko. 663, B. R. T. The Brotherhood ol Railway Trainmen, as brave and as faithful men as ever pulled a throttle, as ever oolleoted a fare, as ever smashed a trunk, or set the brakes on the wheels of a flying train, had a most enjoyable occasion last Sunday afternoon at the best hotel In America. The married men brought their charming wives and the men who wanted to be married, brought the best and the prettiest of girls. An assemblage of handsomer men and prettier women would be hard to find. With never a oare to depress, all were happy and Jolly, and all enJoyed the flow of soul and the feast of good things which had been set before them In the spacious dining ball ot the Eureka. The most polite attention of the best waiters tended to make the viands all the more eojoyable. The popularity of the Eureka Is proof conclusive that a high class hotel will pay in any town. For a long time Abbeville was not specially noted for its good hotels, but a few years ago some of our publio spirited young men determined that the town should have the best hotel to be had for money, and firstclass proprietors aDd good things for the hungry and tired traveler. And thus It was that Abbeville's hotel headB the list Mr. W. Harold McFall. the proprietor, furnished the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, with a program of exercises, with the full expectation that each guest would faithfully perform his part in the play : v. From tbe American Telephone Journal. Failure on tbe part ol subscribers to give tbe number In calling for a conneotlon Is one of tbe principal causes of poor service In many small exchanges. Tbe annoyance Is a petty one. but none the less hard to overcome. A subscriber oftentimes seems to be absolutely determined to refrain from aiding tbe tele pnone compauy nuuuiuiui w iuo is.i wishes of the latter. The reason lor this Is not hard to seek. The I subscriber la aware that the operator knows the number of the person he desires, and Is able to oonnect him promptly without referring to the book. 11 she will do ao. In case of an unknown number a subscriber must himself refer to the book before he can give the call properly. If he calls by name no reference to a list Is necessary, time Is saved, and what appears to be useless work Is avoided. He seems to be wholly unable to put himself In the telephone company's place, and foresee the possible state of affairs In a time of emergency. Then, with all the subscribers giving names to operators who had no means of associating them with the numbers there could hardly be imagined a more oertain cause for confusion. Frequently this la experienced with a night operator, to the annoyance of some particular subscriber, who In Bplte of this cannot be persuaded by the repeated admonitions of the operators to call by number only. He persists In using the names of the persons with whom communication Is desired, thus causing delay in the securing of the desired connection as well qs oonfuslon to the operator. To overcome this tendency is more dlffioult than it ought to be, because many oppose the "calling by number" system as a matter of principle, deriving their false notions from following the course of reasoning Just outlined. _ ?
