Old Time Dances for Confederates. { New Orleans Tbe entertainment committee of the U. C. V. Reunion to be held in New Orleans, April 25, 26 and 27, baa issued a call to veteranB from other cities to arrange their "sets" for an old-time Southern cotillion and Virginia reel, which will be led by General Stephen D. Lee, and Mrs. General Braxton Bragg, on the night of Thursday, April 26th. It is desired that each locality make up its own set so as to be prepared to participate in tbe biggest single dance ever given in the South. The old St. Louis Hotel which is immediately opposite tbe reunion ball, bas been fitted up with 3,000 cots, with electric lights and other conveniences, all of which will be free to veterans. The railroads have made reduced rate to New Orleans for the occasion, and from the present outlook tbe indications are that tbe attendance will exceed even that of the big reunion held here in 1904. The Record waDts to have a friendly , talk with the many splendid men in , this state who are opposing the dispen- j *ary system because they honestly believe its defeat will insure prohibition. ( The advocates of prohibition rank ( among the upright, honest capable, industrious people of our state. They , advocate their cause with strength and warmth without considering tne alii- , ance they have formed to bring about ( the defeat of a system that has, in the | judgment of scores of students, proven j the oest the world has ever known in , makibg for temperance and sobriety. They do not appear to realize that they , bave joined hands with an element j which looks eventually in the reestab- | lishing of the old barroom system in South Carolina and that has notbtng , but contempt for the doctrine they rep- ' resent. Should the dispensary be de- , feated, this barroom crowd, now posing , under the guise of high license, will at I. once cut loose from its former allies and ( throw its entire strength to reestablish- \ ing the open saloon, with its alluring r enticements to the young and weak, j There will be nothing but a scornful { for those who bavedooe most of the i work and polled most of the votes. t The venomous matter now directed t against the dispensary will be turned s Against the prohibitionists; bitterness And innuendo will be widespread, and B men now being cajoled and compli- B men ted as patriots will find how easy ( it is to have their reputations be- ? -mirched if the cause of the saloon can t oe advanced in the matter. Recent city elections in Maine resulted in victories all along the line, for the Democrats, who are bringing to the front the bypocricies of prohibition, its absolute failure, and openly advocating a change to the license system. 1 Prohibition there, as elsewhere, has made a huge cropjof hypocrites, sneaks 1 and midnight dispensers of vile whis- e key, patent medicines and soda fountain concoctions. It has not lessened drunkenness and has caused appetites 1 for heavily loaded patent medicines. It is a notorious fact that whiskey-la- ' den patent medicines sell in immense 1 quantities in Maine and other sections of New England where there is prohibition. The hypocricy of it all has at last appealed to the people. Prohibition in Routh Carolina wonld 1 be uo better or more successful. It is having a trial iu seventeen ?outh Car- J olina counties today, and drunkenness, deception, encouragement of violation of law are widesDread. The saloon system, with its attractive mirrors, mixed drinks, congenial conviviality, pool room attachments, breed trouble for the youth and the weak of our state. It is the social drink in the saloon that is the curse of mankind. The dispensary system furnishes no such alluring inducements to drink. The man who must have his toddy" has to get it under ciscumstances that do not beguile him into, the habit. The boy stays at home and finds no taste for the raw drink out 6f a bottle. Temperance is encouraged and promoted. The corruption of the past Is over and the people of the state, through their legislature next year, will get legislation that will purify and satisfy. Because there was corruption in the great City of Philadelphia the city was Qot wiped off the map. It was the sorrupt politicians who were sent into oblivion. Because corrupt men in the postoffice department made thonsands )Ut of the governmeut was no reason 'or the abolition of the department. Fhe men were punished ana the opjurtunities for graft were reduced to ihe minimum. Because a human be g is sinful and does wrong, we do lot cnt his head off to cure him. We ;ry to reform a?d make him better, md we generally succeed.
