Declare people or Coonly Wlnh lo Stamp-Oat Blockade DiNtlllerlea and Ash AhhUIhiicp. Special to Tbe State. Blacksburg, Nov. 22.?Only a few lays over a year ago, Cherokee county, inder tbe provisions of tbe Brine law, ook tbe initiative iu abolishing tbe lispensary system, and by a majority role of nearly five to one, forced the closing of the institution at this place ind at Gaffoey. Since that time the people of the county have madestrenu>us efforts to enforce the prohibition aw, but tbe citizens of that section >f country bordering on the North Carolina and York couuty lines, beieve tbat tbey cannot, effectually tamp out the numerous blockade diiilleries which infest that portion of the wunty without aid from thegovenor? ill efforts to secure tbe assistance of he proper federal authorities having >roved fruitless. From a reliable ouroe, it is stated tbat for tbe above easons, a petition has been forwarded o the govenor which reads in part as Uiuwts; > We, tbe undersigned residents of Cherokee township, Cherokee county, C., beg to chII your attention to the oilowlug matter: " The dispensaries at Blacksburg and Saffney were voted oui by the people inder the provisions* of the Brice act, ?fov. 8th, 1904. Prior to that titne here were a number of prosecution* or tbe illicit manufacture and sale/of Iquor in said territory, but, since tbe losing of the dispensaries at the places bove referred to and consequent reuoval of tbe State constables, the iurease in the illicit manufacture and ale of liquor has increased to such an xtent that it has become a source ol he greatest annoyance to the respectbleand lawabiding residents of tblf ownshlp. While blockade distillerier. h?un ripflfrnved In this territory, ee mo?t positively asaeit that there xe at least four of that kind not in opration. There is a United States deluty marshal in this county but he is { ocated at Gaffoey and though the conUtiou of affairs in this section has been epeatedly called to his attention, he emaius inactive and confines himself o the town of Gaffney?a place on the rent side of Broad river and npon ebicb side blockade distillery has nevr been known to have been operated a the last 20 years. "For tfii above reasons, we most espectfully urge your excellency to lace a State constable at Blacksburg, irbicb is adjacent to the territory ineated by the parties referred to. "Therefore, feeling confident that ou will aid us in ridding ourselves of his lawless element, we remain." The petition, from what ytfur correpondent can learn, has beeD signed, by be most respectable people of the 1maedlute section of country troubled and y those of the adjacent section. Anderson, Nov. 22.?Pursuant to a 1 all issued on Monday a rally of the riends of the dispensary was held toay in the court house. The meetiDg 788 attended bv about 160 people. [ peeches in favor of retaining tbe disensary were made by Mayor J. M. 1 ullivan, R. ?. Ligon, president of the Huok otton mill*, J. Belton Wataon, lemoer of the bouse of representatives, . L. Jackson, a former member of tbe ouee, E. M. Bucker, Jr., member of be bouse, B. W. Simpson, chairman f the board of trustees of Clemson col?ge, and J. E. Breazeale, a former aember of tbe house. The most promaent argument advanced against votog out the dispensary was that prohiition could not be enforoed in the ounty, that tbe blind tigers would beome intolerable. The belief was ex* tressed generally that the dispensary aw could be perfecled and shorn of its orrupt features. The meeting was presided over by I. N. Pearman, a former member of ^Af MAnnooan^oHuoa \f r A lie UUUOU VI 1 C|/I VOT'UVMia ? Mki >t. Carpenter acted as secretary. The following resolution, introduced >y Hon. J. E. Breazeale, was unaninously adopted: " Resolved, That in our opinion the ime has not arrived when a prohibition law oan be enforced in thisoounty md that we regard tbe dispensary aw, properly enforced under existing iircumstance<>, the best solution of the iqunr question. "Resolved further, That we favor a trlct enforcement of the law, and tbe emoval from office of all corrupt offllials and their prosecution in the lourts, not only as a matter of justice, )ut as an example for others in the uture. " We therefore approve the dispenary law for what it has already accom>lished and for what we believe it can till accomplish if strictly enforced, ind we do not believe that the condilons under a prohibiti n law will be b good as the conditions now existing nour county." Tbe more ardent friends of the disionaorv bfa nlAlmincr t.hftt the tide has >eeu turned and that the dispensary is aved in Anderson county. What efect the meeting today will really have emains to be seen, but whatever it acomplishes in tbe way of changing mblic sentiment, it marks a distinct >nd organized effort to save the sysem in this county.
