Wide Range on Price*. The fluctuations in the price of cotton are nothing when compared to the price which is set on the different dispensary folk by wouldbe customers. In Spartauburg the price of a dlnponsary man's favors ranges from $25 all the way up to $275. Ia Columbia a dispensary man's favor comes much higher than In Spartauburg. $30,000 was offered to one Mr. Mlxon, and even tbat price was refused. We are not informed as to the selling price, but assume tbat the moving figures were si) 11 tngtier. Nothing that ban appeared in Ibe paper*, lor a long time baB brought to our esrs more remarks of an amusing kind tban tbe statement of Mr. Mixon tbat be was offered $30 000 One man said tbat tbe prloe was too high, another suggested $500 as taking figures, another thought tbat Mr. Mixon should bave considered tbe offer as a special discount, and given the State oredlt lor ?30,000 discount od tbe bill. It was suggested, too, that Mlxon ought to go to tbe penitentiary for not acting In the Interest of the State. But it would seem that dispensary folk like cotton, are sometimes, on the market' to tbe highest bidder. In Abbeville there are perhaps 500 men wbo have been at work all tbelr lives gathering up tbe dollars. Among that number tbere are not a dozen men wbo have made 830,000 And nobody aooui nere, as iar as we uave heard, has given Mr. Mlxon much credit for throwing away the opportunity of a life time This dispensary Investigation has been a revelation and a surprise. The pitiful stories of men being bought at prices ranging from 825 toS275 is surprising and the effrontery with which men proclaim their own shame Is amazing. And the high price which a drummer placed upon Mixon, we think, will be accepted as the biggest Joke that has been perpetrated on the oommlsslon. The fact 1?( the whole thing seems to be a monstrous joke, wherln depravity of the witnesses may not oe careiuuy cuuccaicu. In view of the testimony now before tbe world, we offer this resolution. Resolyed, that, with some exceptions, witnesses before the commission have proven by their own testimony that they are as a rule, a shameless set. Therefore, Resolved, that other and better men be put in charge of the dispensary offices. The Prenbytfrian College. Abbeville can have, and should bave, tbe Presbyterian College. Tbe opportunily of a life time is presented, and if we fail to accept It, Abbeville maj be forever without a oollege. Let those who bave the good of tbe town at heart make proper effort, and tbe prize will be oors. Tt io nseiPRa for na to attemnt to enumerate the many ways In which this people, morally, tdu cationally and commercially would be benefitted by tbe presence of a college. As the whole people would be benefitted, the proper way to get tbe college Is to offer city bond* for It. Tbe Syiiod Is now determined to make a college wbereln a much larger number of studentB will be educated than heretofore. Besides tbe tuition fees, tbe board and tbe clothing that a one bundred or two hundred students would spend wou'd be large. Again: If tbe oollege comes it will bring wltb it an endowment of S50.000 wblch would be used in bulldlDg up our waste places, It such still exist Wbile we think the college would be wortb several bundred thousand dollars, It is possible that $50,000 of city bonds would secure It. Tbe increased value of our property and the increased business of tbe city would more than pay interest on our bonds. A moment's reflection would convince al* * ? *? ? mofli aoyooay ui me gietii. impui i?u ui ( getting the college, which would be worth 1 more to us than a new cotton mill or any other enterprise which we now have In mind. Song Books. Last Sunday morning Rev. Mr. Kennedy, while In the Associate Reformed pulpit re f erred to tbe scarcity ol copies of the Bible Songs. He thongbt that tbe church should be supplied with a sufficient number so that p a copy might be offered to slraDgers or ^ visitors who may be present at any ser- f vice. He Invited those members of tbe oon- , gregatlon who sympathised with tbe proposition to leave their money with Mr. McOlll, who would order books with the money lelt \ wltb blm for that purpose. ^ la tbls speech we were reminded of a little ^ matter while Mr. Ewart was pastor. A m.?mher of the congregation was, llfco Mr. Kennedy, Impressed with the soarclty of and the * necessity lor Bible SoDgs, and asked blm to j see the members In relerence to the matter. ^ Mr. Ewart very readily agreed with the ? mem be r and accepted bis check as bis contrlbatlon for the purpose. Mr. Ewart's ? great Interest in securing the requisite num- j ber of books was manifested by bis forwarding the aforementioned check, and receiving ^ In return books to the amount of that check, j I Not Reporting Hernions Nuw. , On condition that we be excused from here |] after reporting or commenting upon the ser- c in one in the Associate Reformed church we f 1 ncreased our contribution to the pastor's alary, and we are not now reporting ser- y mons. t: The Methodist church was closed last b Sunday morning and the Associate Reformed oongregation were glad to have with them y several of the brethren of that flock. All the a neople seem to be pleased with the Dew (i pastor. We were gratified that the preacher b saw no necessity lor explaining to the cod- a gregatlon In wboee praise the I'balms were e sang. He took ltforgianted that the con- I gregatlon kDew that much. j The prayer on Sunday morning was gooJ a and comforting In many respect*, und It p was one which must have been thoroughly e acceptable to those In whose behalf it was j< ottered. a On next Sunday morning the most comfortable sacrament of our blessed Lord will v be celebrated, and all the brethren were urged v to be present. ] ? ; FrlvllouN Rrllglou and I'letlj M1II1 " nery.
