The following ls an editorial writ ten for The Watchman and Defender. But aa Professor Gregory delivered hie lecture two or three times in Colum bia, and in as many different placee, I thought that it would be well to re produce it in The Indicator tor the benefit ot ita readers. The Bahai Movement. On the fifth Sunday in January the editor worshipped at the Sydney Park C. M. E. Church in Columbia by a special invitation of tho pastor, ROT. N. P. Haygood, D. D. Arriving at the church belora the hour for beginning the services, we were asked to take a seat in the pulpit, which we did. While sitting there lacing the congre gation ,aud watching the people as they entered the temple ot worship, we no ticed one of the ushers as he con ducted a stranger to a iront seat. The stranger was a man, uud he was not preprocessing in his appearance. lie 'looked ordinary. He sat quietly and ! ?'listened lo a good sermon. He had previously arranged with the pastor to deliver a free lecture in Sydney, 'Park Church at 4 o'clock p. m., and at the close of the sermon, Pastor Haygood introduced the stranger as Prof. Louis G. Qregory of Washing ton, D. C., and requested him to speak bf . his lecture. Then Prof. Qregory arose, and, in a good, clear voice, he Stated that at 4 o'clock he would dis cuss the principles of -"The Bahai Movement," and invited everybody in Columbia to come out, and hear him. .But .'when'we "li ea rd Dr. Haygood say that "Professor Gregory of Wash ington, D. C., will say a word," then (fdr treacherous memory by associa tion recalled the fact that about' 15 years ago, when we were stationed at Old Bethel in. Charleston, a man by that same name came to that city, and delivered several lectures on the ?aliai Religion in some of the churches and halla. Af that time there was a brilliant young lawyer in Charleston who was a member of > Old Bethel. His parents before him were members of this church. This youug lawyer was christened in this church and grew up in the Sunday School, became a member and a trustee ol the church. This y crang lawyer took hold of this new religion, and triQd to master it. We heard him deliver an a.ddr csa in U# Bethel at a platform- service Oil - a Sabbath night, and his subject waa 'Love." And this is the principle doc trine of the Bahai religion. His ad dams was.beautiful and eloquent, and impressive. And this young lawyer continued to wrestle with this Bahai revlon, trying to master it, until he :o$pl3tely lost his mind, and had to je brought to the insane asylum here ' in Columbia.. tZ But what is "The Bahai Movement 1 wr Religion?" We heard Professor 1 ir?gory at Sydney Park on the fifth Sunday; afternoon in Columbia, and :an truly' say for him that he was really eloquent and'forceful. He held, he'close attention of his audience for < nore than an hour. And these are : hb> principles of his religion as he ' augh t them : TThe Search for Truth; The One- 1 less- ol Humanity; the Unity of Be lgiens; Religi?n and Science Agree; Dquality of Men and Women; Aban lonment of Prejudice; A Universal I .language; Universal Education; Uni ?rsal Peace; An International Tribu- 1 lal; Solution of the Economic Probl em; The' Power of the Holy Spirit." The principles seem to be all right', mt the- Lord Jesus Christ is not recog tized in them, and any religion that tali no Christ in it, is not worthy of he attention of intelligent Christian ( )copie. ? And any attempt to teach, \ ni orce and build up a religion with- ! ?ut Christ will be ca utter failure. 1 :ho Bahai religion teaches love, but t' ls. not the love that Christ taught. ? t is: not the love that the Apostles j aught. It is not the love that is pro- < tailgated by Christianity. It seems to < ls to be a head religion, and not a \ ieart religion. Nicodemus, a ruler ' J if tho Jews, was a'man who belived ? n; and taught the Bahai religion, but * Christ told him that he must be born gain. ' And no man can love God and tis neighbor without' being converted. .But . another word concerning the :oung lawyer who. was brought to the laylum. After he was brought here ils par on tn wrote us to visit him os >fton as possible ,and we did so. The lrat time we called to . see him he ? leid in his hand a little pamphlet, !. ind we asked him for it. He readily 1 lavo it to us, and- when we examined., t, wo found it to be a book on the lanai religion. We took it from him md brought it home, cowing that it ! vas this that caused him to lose his ! i$ind. -Ho eventually died 'In tty* | isylum, and we took his body home' o Charleston, assisted at the funeral, ; ind followed him to the grave. Bat. vhile this young man embraced th* j Bahai religion, he never left his hurch, and his body was taken back o the church of his parents and to the :hurch ?f his childhood, and from his church he was buried: This is raat the Bahai religion'did for a .'bril-' Ifti?. -1 >"? ? '? .: fV....'xi.Hv'-/;^*s Han young lawyer. Professor Gregory spoke several times In Columbia, and each time he was ahrewd enough to conceal his rea] purpose. Ho displayed considerable sagacious Judgment in the wording aud presentation of his new doctrine. But while the people admired his ora tory, they failed to accept his teach ing. The impression he seemed to have made was short lived, and soon I passed away. But there may be a few who like the young lawyer referred I to above, who will follow the pro fessor. 1. E. Li. Notwithstanding the fact that the Hace Conferance was not as largely attended this year as in some years of the past as are so many other organizations these days during strenous times from every point of view, the Race Conference was a success. Many helpful addresses were made on live topics of the day by men and women best prepared to make them.
