The success of Monday's meeting of the County Cotton Growers' Association is truly gratifying to all friends of the pre sent movement of the farmers. The attendance was good, des pite the bud weather, and there was evidence of much enthu 6iain and a determination on the part of the people of old Lancaster to do their part to- j warn maKinn tlie association a permanent success. Local asso ciations generally pa;d over their dues and assessments and reported satisfactory progress. The Association wisely decided to put au organizer in the field, ^nd it selected a good man for the work, Mr. Geo W. Joues. vSeveral good speeches wore made, M'.yor Wylie's being especially strong. He gave his hearers excellent advice along the lines of netting on a cash basis and marketing cotton, as < well as upon other points. The Mayor's remarks evidently made a good impression 011 all present. ( POSTOFFICE STATISTICS. I It llw, \\T. xv o u um niu *T anuiii^* I ton correspondence of the i Charleston Post that South Caro- i linn uses less of Uncle Sam's I postage stamps than any other i state in the union, the per capita i of circulation being only 52 j cents, while that of Nevada, i which has the highest record, j in 43 87. The District of Columbia comes next to Nevada wall 43.43 per head. New > York ranks tiiiid, its per capita 1 being $3.33. I South Carolina's low rate is 1 attributed to the state's lar^e | negro population, many famili es of colored people never writing or receiving a letter from ye >r to year. Virginia. ?i'h 3,426 postoffices, comes next to Pennsylvania. South Carolina's gross post office receipts ior the last fiscal year were $738,724, while those of New York were $26,338,164. It is stated that the rural free delivery routes in a lew of the Southern stales, South Carolina and Mississippi among them, "do not pay for themseiv s." In other words, tiiey are being operated at a loss to the gov ernment, but there is 110 intimation that any routes will be discontinued on that account. THE NEWS AS AN ADVEHTIS1NG MEDIUM. The "Business Column" of The New* has proven to b-* one of tlie most attractive features of the paper. It appea s that everybody reads it, and many teils us that .t is the fust thing in the paper that they look for. It is astonishing what a large per cent of the public is constantly on the lookout tor bargains, special sales, etc. All "want" ads, "lost and found" notices, etc., are closely scanned by the average reader. Advertisers themselves are well pleased with the business column, which never fails to bring desired results. It was only a few days ago that Mr. H. W. Mobley,of Heath Springs, told us of his gratifying experience with The News' column of business notices. Some two or three weeks ago he had inserted in it a small notice to the efleet Ih?t he wanted to buy a second hand peanut roaster. In a short time he was surprised at the large number of letters that lie received, offering to sell him all sorts of roasters, lie finally purchased what he wanted from Mr. S. T. Blackmon, of Lancaster, who, having seen iMr Mobley's notice, promptly com municated with him. Other instances of the same kind have come under our observation. It is a fact worthy of note that The News, with its prei-ent large and rapidly increasing circulation, affords an exceptionally fine field for advertis ers. We doubt if another paper iii I lie state, outside of the luilies, is read by more persons than is The News. According to the national government's basis of estimating population, his newspaper has over ten housand regular readers. As in advertising medium, there ore, The News unquestionably ranks among the best. ? A lady 111 Union county, S.
