Isn't it about time the women's clubs of Lancaster were "handing out" some more of their cohl victuals to their liun grv husbands and sweethearts? Following the advice of an eminent physician, the members of the breeches brigade have given their "bread baskets" a nice, long vacation, and are now eager and anxious to line up again at the social pie counter. The address delivered Tuesday by Dr. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Columbia, at the unveiling of tlie monument erected to the memory of Mr. N U. Gonzales, was a magnificent and deserved irmuie 10 ine lire ana cnaracrer of the lamented editor of The State. Many edi'ors and otlv r writers have tenderly laid tri butes upon the grave of Mr. Gonzales, but none surpassing in genuineness of sentiment and beauty of diction the oration of Dr. Smitb. THE AUDITORS' MEETING. The meeting of county auditors in Columbia Wednesday, held pursuant to the call of Comptroller General Jones, was well attended, nearly every county in the state being represented. Mr. John A. Cook, Lancaster's model auditor, was of course on hand. The object of the meeting was to confer with the eomu troller general with reference to his recent circular lettor in relation to the assessment of property next year at its true valuation. Tho sentiment ol the meeting was strongly in favor of co-operating with tho comptroller general in his effort to enforce the law in regard to returns. The action of the meeting is thus stated by tho Columbia i vrtui u The convention finally decided to enforce the instructions of the comptroller general and also adopted a resolution which called for au enforcement of the income tax law. Another resolution was adopted favoring changing the tax penalty laws from a graded penalty to a permanent four per cent, penalty until March 15, when the oxe cutions were to be issued. 4 tff-. . . it , l. /l \ /MEETING OF THE COTTON ASSO-1 " CIATION NEXT MONDAY. ] The larmers and their irieods are reminded ol the tact that next Monday is t lie day lor I he meet- t in?r of the County Cotton Growers' Association. It will be re- v called that the 9th instant was ? the regular time tor the meeting, I but, owing to the inclemency oi 1 !. ., ... .. V | (lie weatiier on that uuy, <ue 1 officers of (he association postponed the gathering umil tlie 1S!?? instant?next Mondu.x. The meetiiiii is called primarily no reorganize ihe association and lo elect delegates to the approach ing meeting of the state association, but other matters of importance will no doubt come up lor 8 consideration. It is earnestly desired, therefore, that there shall t tie a large attendance. t The people cannot aff.?rd to J allow their interest in the cotton . I association to wane at thi juncture?there is too much at stake. ' The organization has achieved ( wonders, it is true; it haw made tlie South millions of dollars better off; it has taught the people 1 the value of co-operation; it has brought all classes closer together ? ?the farmers, bankers, mer- | chants and professional men ; . but the victory is not yet won , i and there is much, very much i i more work to be done by the 1 1 association. Hundreds of counties through- ' out the South are going right ahead perfecting their organiza- j tions and making ready to con- ' tinue the fight bo well begun? now let Lancaster come forward < and take a place in the front ranks. = ( THAT COUNTY FAIR SUGGESTION } Is the suggestion of the Lan caster News regarding a county fair to go by default? We hope 1 not, and our purpose in alluding , to the matter at this time is to ( call attention to the fact, that " now is the time to begin the j work if we are to have the fair, a It will take fully a year's time to J lay the plans and to do the work ? necessary to having a crediiuole tai?-, but all this time and thought 1 will be amply repaid in the re- [ suits to be attained by such a t means. *j Let some of the leading men of the county take the matter up. ?Kershaw Era. 3 Yes, esteemed contemporary, ' it looks like that suggestion is . going to "die or bornin' The News and the Era have faithfully c ur<red the imnortancn of the mat- - ter being taken up by the peo s pie, and have at length 6et forth j the many advantages to be derived trom the holding of county fairs, but, so far as we know, no f 17 . H "leading men" have as yet taken t initiative steps toward the hold- " ing of a fair in Lancaster county ( next year. ? Let us not despair, however. It may be that this is not an opportune time for the inauguration ] of such a movement?too near . the Christmas and New Year holidays. Besides, just now the I farmers are too much absorbed in their fight against the cotton bears and speculators to devote ^ much time to planning lor ? county fair a year ofT. Suppose we wait until alter tne approaching holidays and until the Cotton Growers' Associ lion shall have won its present i battle, and then renew the agita- 8 tion for a county lair? t c r J i Business Notices.
