The educational rally that was held at Dacusville on Saturday, the 3d instant, was a decided success. About 300 people were present and there would have been a thousand or more had it not rained. The exercises were presided over by Supt. R. T. Hallum, and prayer was offered by J. P. Robinson, after which W. Bv. West of the department of agriculture and commerce for the state was introduced, and his Subject was "Agriculture in Relation to the common schools flw* " TT: J J v?. mo uiiaw. ni8 auuress was well received. The next speaker was Prof. Wi K. Tate, Supt. of Elementary Schools of South Carolina. He spoke about .thirty-five minutes on the upbuilding of the schools of the State. His address was splendid. Prof. D. W. Daniel, of Clemson College made an address 011 the mission of schools. His address was not only interesting and in- | structlvc-i hut. n inin.r I fact, Prof. Daniel had to stop speaking on account of Iho rain which fell in sheets for about three quarters of an hour. When the rain had subsided a, | sumptuous dinner was spread ; by the ladies. The afternoon | session was turned over entirely to Miss Elise C. Rudd, the field agent of 8. C. I. E. She talked to the people for one heuron the upbuilding of the rural schools. The speaking was greatly ap-1 predated and it is hoped that the speakers will return to Pickens county and stay longer. Supt. Swear in gen and Prof. W. H. Hand were unavoidably detained from being present. The meeting will no doubt prove a great benefit to that section of the cortnty. Miss Elise C. Rudd, field agt., of the School Improvement Association, spent last week in lower Pickens county. Duvinii her stay in our county she also visited four schools, Reunion, Rocky Knob, Flat Rock and Mauldin. Miss Uudd is an able ; worker for our country schools and took every opportunity to instruct patrons and teachers in the needs of our rural districts. She clearly pointed out j that the same number of teachers in a consolidated school can do more efficient work than if they were in separate buildings. She told of one-room schools in /~1 I I 1 _ S\ *T 1 \jri vmt), wconee, iNowDcrry. j Williamsburg and many other I counties, which cooperated by uniting and in this way were enabled to have equipment for giving thorough training to its pupils and to become the intellectual centre of the community, erected by its patrons as a monument to the cause of education. Laying stress on the state aid for rural schools, Miss Rudd urged the patrons to raise - - l us large sums or. money as pos- J sible and get a sum equal to one ha'f the amount from the state and county each, thus doubling the original sum. There is no parent of teacher who can afford to let this opportunity pass and deprive our future citizens' of an education. Miss Rudd has promised to; visit Pickens again in the near' future. She wishes to visit ma- \ ny of the schools in ali parts of i the county. Wc hope that every school boy and girl as well as every patron and teacher will lend a helping hand for better schools.
