According to The State, Holder Properties and the USC Development Foundation are partners in the project for now. Addam’s University Bookstore has already selected a new location at 152 Assembly Street. “We’re moving to Assembly Street, in the old Soap’s and Opening Break location next to Subway, Papa John’s and Wing Zone,” said Ann Barlow, the bookstore’s manager. “We love our current location, but the move will bring a ton of new parking spaces, we will go from 15 to over 100. We’re still close to the university and the stadium, and if we have to move it is a great location to move to.” Brantley Wholesale Meats has already moved to Columbia Meats to 1140 Carolina Street in West Columbia near the Airport. According to the Carolina Reporter, Brantley, who inherited Brantley Meats from his father, negotiated to sell his lot when he received a bid that he thought was suitable. Brantley’s Wholesale Meats has been open for 57 years at its Main Street location. It is the oldest business on south Main, and has watched the university grow all the way up to its doorstep. Students are concerned that one of the last businesses within walking distance to campus is being demolished. “It will be more of an inconvenience for students car as the DCP was a great place to pick up a snack,” said Amanda Murphy, a second-year public relations student. “I think (the bookstore’s) move down towards Papa John’s will be good because it will be easier to park and access the store, and technically it is still in walking distance to campus. Bringing condos on campus may hurt the student atmosphere that USC promotes. Now, instead of the students who lived in the Towers having the closest access to the Coliseum and the Strom Thurmond Center, people who work in and around „,.n i-1__ one of our campuses best buildings, the Strom.” According to The State, Holder Properties plans to build a six-story, $43 million luxury condo and retail store development on Main and Blossom streets. The prices for the condos will range from $275,000 to $550,000. The project will have 115 one , two- and three-bedroom condominiums, 6,500 square feet of ground-level retail space and an underground parking deck. Construction on the Horizon Center, located at the block bounded by Blossom, Wheat, Main and Assembly streets, is planned to begin this summer, with completion slated for a year later. John Holder, chief executive of Holder properties, expects the market for the condos to be people involved with the university, including staff, professors and others from around the state who have an affiliation with the university, as well as legislators and professionals who work in 'downtown Columbia. Suri has put a list on the counter for students to write down their contact information and encourages them to keep in touch. “I got four pages of contacts in the first three hours,” Suri said. “We will all miss this place a lot.” Comments on this story?
