CAROLINA © BRIEF Kellett appointed development head Cindy Kellett has been named director of development for the University of South Carolina’s College of Mass Communications and Information Studies. Kellett will be responsible for seeking gifts for the college’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications and School of Library and Information Science. A graduate of the journalism school, Kellett has more than a decade of fundraising experience with the American Cancer Society and the Easter Seal Society of South Carolina. She has spent the past seven years as a financial adviser with Wachovia Securities. “Cindy brings both experience and enthusiasm to our college — she is, after all, one of our graduates — and at a time when we are raising the stature and profile of both its schools,” said Charles Bierbauer, dean of the college. State Tax raises could lead to time share battles PINOPOLIS — Horry County Council is preparing for what could become a legal battle with the time share and casino boat industries. Next month, council will decide whether to charge time share units a $3 nightly fee. And on Tuesday, council will decide whether to tax or phase out casino boats in Conway. Both decisions could trigger protracted lawsuits. The time share industry opposes what would be among the first fees of that kind in the nation. Two years ago, the council voted “yes” twice on a $5 nightly fee on time share units. Only one winning ticket was sold for Saturday’s jackpot, the largest in the country’s history, the Powerball Web site said. USC, Clemson among top donation recipients The Rssocidted Press GREENVILLE — The University of South Carolina and Clemson University have ranked in the top 70 among public colleges for getting money out of donors. USC ranked 37th among 461 public schools and Clemson ranked 70th. Among the 1,005 public and private two and four-year schools, USC ranked 64th, according to the annual survey released Thursday by the Council for Aid to Education. The Wachovia Foundation recently gave $1 million each to programs at USC and Clemson. USC “is in the planning stages of a major capital campaign,” said Michelle Dodenhoff, interim vice president for university advancement. “We are currently evaluating funding ... potential.” Clemson has 13 major A gift development officers and plans to add three more by midsummer, said Brian O’Rourke, development and alumni affairs director. “In order for Clemson University to become a Top 20 university, we need to increase our endowment,” O’Rourke said.
