It’ll be a good thing. accurately as a two-hour film will allow. Compared to the five-hour 1995 British mini-series, the new “Pride and Prejudice” presents the quirky Bennet family in a much more pleasurable and shorter feature length film. This new version chooses to highlight the best scenes of the book instead of following every single minute detail, and viewers will be grateful for the reduced length. While there are minor deletions from the book’s plot, the film stays true to the essence of the novel and exhibits Mr. Darcy’s supposed pride and Elizabeth’s impulsive prejudices in all their color and vivacity. The romance is powerful and evident without losing the audience in overdoses of Austen esque diction. Keira Knightley gives a convincing portrayal of Elizabeth. She is just bubbly enough, still maintaining Elizabeths vital intelligence, and her countenance displays her independence and likeability. This is Knightley’s best performance yet. Matthew MacFadyen personifies Mr. Darcy, who has to be unassuming and stuffy but ultimately endearing. MacFadyen pulls off the role with charm to spare. While Colin Firth mastered Mr. Darcy in the 1995 mini-series, MacFadyen matches Firth’s performance, making it difficult to choose the better Darcy. Female viewers will find MacFadyen’s piercing eyes and shaggy dark hair unforgettable and will leave the theater wanting to find their own Mr. Darcy. The beautiful setting of rural England, the authentic-looking clothing and the elaborately adorned houses add to the film’s appeal. Audiences feel as if they are in 1797, not looking back across two centuries. For fans of Austen, “Pride and Prejudice” is a must-see film. Minus stiff language and elongated scenes,, the movie brings the novel tq those foreign to Austen’s mystique so that they, too, can appreciate and enjoy the story in a whole new way.
