CAROLINA © BRIEF USC, Claflin to study disease discrepancies USC and Claflin University in Orangeburg will study disparities in the incidence of AIDS and cancer with a five year, $7.5 million federal grant. One study will explore why the human papillomavirus persists in some women while it lasts only a short time in others. The virus is a precursor to cervical cancer. The grant also will provide for new fellowships and research internships on both campuses,' a public health research seminar series and a post-baccalaureate program in public health at USC. The community-based research project is the third such partnership between a major research institution and a historically black college in South Carolina. A partnership between the Medical University of South Carolina and South Carolina State University focuses on metabolic syndrome, studying physical activity and nutrition and their relationship to health disparities in cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Mitchell responded to a call of a student with marijuana. Mitchell came in contact with Ezechiel Travis, 19, who possessed a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance. Travis was arrested and taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. SATURDAY, NOV. 12 Failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension (first degree), 2:15 a.m. Corner of George Rogers Boulevard and Bluff Road Reporting officer J.M. Harrelson stopped a blue sedan after it made an improper lane change. The car stopped, the driver switched places with another occupant, then fled the scene. Harrelson requested more officers and turned his siren on. The car stopped on Idlewild Road, and the driver, Travis White, 19, exited and fled on foot. Harrelson conducted a felony car stop and took the other two occupants, Ronald Brown, 25, and another unidentified male, into custody. White was later arrested. Malicious injury to real property, 10 a.m. Carolina Coliseum, 701 Assembly St. USC’s Athletics Department said someone damaged a men’s restroom, kicking in a stall door halfway off its hinges, knocking a soap dispenser off the wall, partially removing a sink faucet and trying to pry open a paper towel dispenser. Coaxom Public, disorderly conduct, 1:15 p.m. Williams-Brice Stadium, 1000 George Rogers Blvd. Michael Hickman, Jr., 23, was observed to be acting disorderly.
