Centers weight room is closed for renovations, as faculty, staff and students will have to commute to the Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center for the rest of June to work out. Starting June 5, the Blatt’s weight room closed for remodeling, but began receiving daily shipments of new equipment. The weight room is scheduled to reopen June 30. Director or Campus Recreation Herbert Camp said the center will house 110 new training stations, as well as new free- and dead-weights. Camp noted the new Hammer Strength and Reiser fitness equipment, which works off air pressure instead of dead weight, letting users change the resistance by button and in smaller increments. Camp said he thinks the remodeling will make the workout facilities one of the best in the state. « a r. i •. i . i iuiu wv, <uv umiv vvilii renovations, the Blatt weight room will be the second-best in the state. Third-year exercise science student Brittany Vallie said the longer the Blatt is being renovated, the fewer people will come to work out. “I think that the remodeling is a great thing. It is hard for Blatt to compete with Strom due to its age,” she said. “With the new equipment, though, I think that students and staff will become more willing to workout at Blatt, but during these renovations we are seeing fewer and fewer people coming in and out.” Officials will hold a grand opening for the new weight room in the fall. A similar grand opening will . be held for the Stroms new cardio theater, featuring 50 machines with 15-inch LCD screens to allow students to watch DVDs or Gamecock cable or listen to CDs.
