SEC News & Notes Season to be last for UT hoops coach Tennessee announced Monday that basketball coach Buzz Peterson would not return next season. Peterson was hired in April 2001 and went 61-59 in four seasons with no NCAA Tournament appearances.' A former player under UNC legend Dean Smith, Peterson previously coached at Appalachian State. Jerry Green, whom Peterson succeeded at UT, took his team to the NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons. The Volunteers finished the season 14-17 and 6-10 in the SEC. UT dropped its final game to Kentucky in the second round of the SEC Tournament and ensured Peterson’s second losing season as Volunteer head coach. Tennessee returned all five starters from last year’s squad and received a welcome surprise in freshman Chris Lofton. Lofton, one of the nation’s top 3-point shooters, could not make the difference in a Volunteer season plagued with inconsistency. Tennessee’s Iorg nets weekly honors Tennessee outfielder Eli Iorg was named SEC Player of the Week after leading the Vols to a perfect 4-0 record last week. Iorg recorded 13 hits and 13 RBIs, including four home runs in four games. Iorg went 5-of-6 against Oakland, with three doubles and three RBIs. Iorg knocked in five more runs and scored one against Radford on Friday. Auburn junior Josh Sullivan picked up SEC Pitcher of the Week honors. Sullivan tossed a complete game shutout against VMI last week while striking out nine. The right-hander allowed just three hits, all singles, and no VMI runner advanced to second base. In his last four games, Sullivan is 3-1, with a 1.82 ERA and 27 strikeouts to go with just two walks. USC walks into road win By BRIAN SAAL THE GAMECOCK Fresh off two big victories against rival Clemson last weekend, Carolina wanted to carry its momentum forward against Wofford on Tuesday night. The Gamecocks proved last weekend they were not going to give up in late innings, and Tuesday’s matchup would prove to be no different. The Terriers got to USC’s Arik Hempy early, but the sophomore proved he could control a hostile environment for his first start of the season, Wofford third basemen Adam Wood pulled out a two-out single to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat. Hempy was taken out after two innings, giving up two hits, a strikeout and a walk. Sophomore Harris Honeycutt then came in for 2.2 innings and gave up a double by Wofford shortstop Brandon Waring in the fourth. The Gamecock offense woke up in the sixth, sending 12 batters to hit and bringing half of them in to touch home plate. They relied on their patience, as Wofford walked four batters and hit another. The inning started by a walk to sophomore Jon Willard and continued with a single by junior Michael Campbell and walk to senior Brendan Winn. Wofford sent in Charles Vartanian to face third basemen Joey Friddle who ended up winning the battle by smacking a two-run single. Carolina would then score three of its runs, thanks to two fielding errors, and Steve Pearce drew in a runoff walk. Carolina led at the end of the inning, scoring three earned runs and three unearned runs off just two hits and two walks and with bases loaded. Carolina ended the game with only five hits. Wofford finished with eight hits and three errors. Carolina improves its record to 16-1, while Wofford falls to 9-11. Carolina will begin conference play against the 16-1 Arkansas Razorbacks. The game is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Sarge Frye Field. Comments on this story? Maybe this won’t play a major role in the NCAA Tournament, but for two reasons (I can’t stand North Carolina, and I’d love to see Rashad McCants have an accident and is a very good team Sophomore McKenna Hughes was the lone player to get a hit for Carolina in the second game, getting a single down the left field line in the fourth. The Gamecocks will have a chance to prevent the sweep at 4 p.m. today in the final game of the on national television), I hope it does. The Austin regional will probably come down to Duke, Syracuse and Kentucky. I think the winner of the probable third round Duke-Syracuse game will go to the Final Four. I’ve got to pick Duke in this one. I’ve always been a Duke fan, and I don’t care if the Saudi Arabian national team showed up wearing those series. Look for the past two consecutive SEC Players of the Week, senior Meghan Cornett and freshman Jessica Josker, to try and lead the Gamecocks to another victory over a ranked opponent. I’ve managed to work in references to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, our kleptomaniac football team, Keith Van Horn and me floated in an entire paragraph about Rashad McCants having diarrhea.
