Tuition CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 ther the communications and tech nology that would set USC’s law school apart from law schools ranked within the top 50. In response to U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of the USC School of Law, Powell said, “It’s a commercial enterprise that has the right to handle their numbers in or der to create a story.” “We truly are one of the consensus top 50 law schools in the nation,” he said. Yet the law school s lower ranking yet higher cost than many other states’ law schools, in addition to its building’s small size and relatively poor condition, continues to leave many USC law students frustrated about the tuition increase. Second-year law student Craig Pendarvis said, “I don’t think any of the increased costs are coming back to the law school.” Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Philip Lacy echoed Pendarvis’ comment. “The biggest concern the law stu is; 11 ™ ■ y ***':vn ..— dents have is that none of the tuition increase goes directly to the law school,” he said. “It will just mean the students will have to borrow more money.” He explained that initially, each school had a policy of value-centered management in which each school would generate its own income, a pol icy USC President Sorensen has moved away from. In contradiction to Powell’s claims, Lacy said the law school is not eligible to receive direct revenues from the tuition increase because the revenues are not self-generated in come. He later conceded that because the tuition increase will benefit the entire university, the law school will even tually receive an indirect benefit. However, Lacy ended in sympa thizing with the law students, saying the tuition had been too high prior to this fall’s increase.
