Greene Street Cocky to return BY ADAM BEAM THE GAMECOCK ’ Cocky will be resurrected on Greene Street this Wednesday as members of Student Government and the Student Gamecock Club paint USC’s mascot on the asphalt in front of the Russell House. Cocky disappeared this summer when Greene Street was re-paved. Alex Kronsteiner, chairman of SG’s athletics committee, has been working for weeks to have Cocky •Repainted. Along with the spirit tunnel that runs underneath Assembly Street, Greene Street’s Cocky is one of the few symbols of school spirit on USC’s campus. “Having the gamecock on Greene Street and the paintings in the tunnel are important and give us our identity as Gamecocks,” Kronsteiner said. Painting Cocky has been diffi cult this year because the paving of Greene Street left no pattern to follow. Kronsteiner said he had to call USC Maintenance to come and paint an outline for the mascot. He said about 20 people are signed up to help paint on Wednesday from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. But Kronstenier doesn’t plan to stop with painting Cocky. He said the athletics committee is looking into painting spurs from Greene Street all the way down Assembly Street to Williams-Brice Stadium. Cocky has been on Greene Street since the mid-1990s, accord ing to Jerry Brewer, director of student life. He said the idea of painting spurs to the stadium is not new and that SGs in the past have had the same idea. He said the problem is that Assembly Street has an enormous amount of commercial traffic that would hin der the maintenance of the paint ings. He said that while SG would have to get permission from the city council and the S.C. Department of Transportation, the biggest support would have to come from the USC administra tion. “I’ve spoken with some of the SG leadership, and I look forward to seeing their proposal and help ing them do it,” he said. Kronstenier said it costs about $350 to paint the mascot on Greene Street, but said he has enough paint to last several coats. The stencil has been outlined on Greene Street for about two weeks. “I’ve been waiting for it to get finished for a while,” said third year history student Dustin Fowler. “I think it’s great.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockudesk@hotmail.com POLICE REPORT I These reports are taken directly from the USC Police Department Compiled by Adam Beam.
