USC Safety BY KATIE MCCLENDON AND LOUISA EYLE I hear it all the time. “Student Government doesn’t do any thing.” Well, as the director of safety for SG, I hope this column will let you see what we are do ing and what needs to be done, specifically in the area of safety. From now on, every other Wednesday, The Gamecock will publish a column on safety is sues. And luckily for you, you won’t have to put up with me each time; someone from the USC Police Department might write the column one week, someone from SHARE the next week and a University Safety Committee member the next. I hope to provide an opportunity to discuss safety issues on cam pus and in the USC area that are important to you. So if you have any questions comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me. My e-mail address is mcclendo@gwm.sc.edu, and I welcome feedback. I’d like to take this time to let you know about a few safety events on campus. On April 15 at 8 p.m., we’re doing a safety walk. The campus will be divid ed into parts, and we will walk with a USC police officer to find areas that are in need of lighting, a curb cut or whatever else we V might find. But in order for this to work, we need as much par ticipation as possible. If you’d like to help make this campus safer by participating in the safe ty walk, please e-mail me. The Clothesline Project was displayed Monday and Tuesday * on Greene Street. The project, which began at USC in 1995, provides an opportunity for survivors of violence to paint a T-shirt expressing their inner sorrows and triumphs. These T-shirts are then displayed on Greene Street so that others can bear witness to the survivors’ experiences. T-shirts are color-coded to rec ognize the uniqueness of each participant’s violent encounter: white for those who have died from violence, yellow for those who have been battered or as saulted, pink for those who have been sexually assaulted, blue for survivors of incest or child sex ual abuse, and purple for those attacked because of their sexual orientation. For more informa tion about the project, contact the Office for Sexual Health and Violence Prevention at 777-7619. McClendon is a fourth-year pharmacy student, and Louisa is a graduate assistant for the Office for Sexual Health and Violence Prevention.
