Two of Carolina’s other starters, Chris Warren and Kerbrell Brown finished with dou ble-digits point tallies. Warren had 11 points and three steals. Brown, scored 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Sophomore Carlos Powell gave USC the big sixth-man effort that the team needed, with 16 points and six rebounds off the bench. With a productive front court of Powell, Brown, Tony Kitchings and Rolando Howell, the Gamecocks handily out-rebound ed the Commodores 33-22. Carolina also had its best shoot ing day in a long time, making 59.6 percent of its shots, including 63.6 percent from behind the arc. “This is a good win for us,” Odom said. “We got some good layups off the press, we didn’t give up many easy baskets, and we did a good job rebounding.” The Gamecocks limited Vanderbilt star Matt Freije to only 13 points. But Brian Thornton, Vandy’s center, picked up the slack with a game-high 22 points. Stallings, though, had a feeling that 1 a night like this would be coming. “I felt South Carolina would have a breakout game against someone. We gave them every chance tonight,” Stallings said. “They were shooting something like 25 percent (from the field) coming into the game, but you had the feeling they would shoot well against someone.” Stallings said he thinks his team could be packing it up for the season. “Some teams, when they get to a point like this in a season, fold,” he said. “And some teams that reach this point move upward. I think our team is choosing the for mer.” Odom can only hope that his Gamecocks are opting for the lat ter. CSU’s Jordan Haar knocked in the game-winning run with a single, while Scotty Thacker brought in two insurance runs with a single of his own. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Carolina’s Demetric Smith struck out to end the game. Sunday; USC 11 - CSU 2 The Gamecocks finally got the bats going and received stingy pitching in the final game of the series, dominating Charleston Southern 11-2. USC was led by Bryan Triplett’s 3-for-4 outing with four RBIs. David Marchbanks (1-0) kept the Buccaneer batters in check during his 71/3 innings, when he gave up two earned runs on five hits and four strikeouts. Carolina’s offense got started in the second inning when Powell scored off a Gardiner sin gle. The big inning came in the sixth, when Triplett hit a bases loaded triple that scored Gardiner, Melillo and Jon Coutlangus to make it a 7-0 game. CSU scored its only two runs with a Brian Sole two-run homer off Marchbanks in the seventh. Offensively, Smith opened the ' scoring by doubling home Curtis for the first run of the game. Fittro got her first RBI of the tournament, bringing in Samantha Jennings. Crane scored on a bases-load ed walk to Smith to finish the scoring for the Gamecocks, earn ing them the championship. Next up for the Gamecocks (5-1) is the Desert Classic Tournament in Las Vegas, where they will face four na tionally ranked opponents, in cluding UCLA, the top-ranked team in the country.
