Bowden’s son faces charges of fraud BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (AP) - A former Alabama quarterback and a son of Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden are among seven people indicted in an alleged securities fraud conspiracy that cost investors $10 million. The federal grand jury indict ment contends that unregistered securities were sold to 14 residents of Alabama, Florida and Tennessee in a scheme called the Millennium Fund. Brian Burgdorf, a quarterback and captain at Alabama as a se nior in 1995, and R. Stephen Bowden are accused of being salesmen of the fund. The 49-year-old Bowden is the oldest of the coach’s four sons. Burgdorf was the backup quar terback on the Alabama team that won the national title in 1992. Another defendant, James Michael Hanks of Hoover is ac cused of recruiting Burgdorf and Bowden into the scheme, which allegedly billed itself as a devel oper of casinos in foreign coun tries and was closed by federal regulators in 1998. other aetenaants are winiam Earl Amos Jr. of Maryland, Richard E. Busch of Panama and Jacques LaTourette of France. The indictment also charges Hanks with committing tax fraud. Burgdorf lawyer Ron Marlow told The Birmingham News that his client is innocent of all charges. Stephen Bowden’s lawyer, Mark White, called said Bowden was a victim. “Steve and his family lost a sig nificant amount of money,” White told The Associated Press on Monday. The News has reported that court records show that Bobby Bowden lost $1.5 million in the scam that used his son as a sales agent. BRIEFLY Tanner to be 2003 USA head coach USC baseball head coach Ray Tanner has been selected as head coach for the 2003 USA Baseball national team. Following a summer schedule that includes about 25 games in the United States, Tanner will head USA Baseball at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. “I am extremely honored to be selected as the head coach of the national team,” Tanner said. “I have had a great affiliation with USA Baseball, and I’m looking forward to coaching the best college players in the coun try. It is a special privilege to wear the red, white and blue while representing our great na tion on the baseball diamond.” This will be Tanner’s fifth stint with USA Baseball, an af filiation that began with a posi tion as assistant coach with the USA National Team in 1993. From 1995 to 1996, Tanner was an assistant on the USA National Team that represent ed the United States in the 1996 summer Olympics. Tanner was also an assistant coach with the United States Olympic team in 2000 that won the gold medal in Sydney, Australia. USC soccer to play spring schedule USC men’s soccer team re leased its 2003 spring schedule Tuesday. The Gamecocks open the spring in Charleston, where it will take on the College of Charleston and Jacksonville on Feb. 22 at Patriot’s Point Field. Times for both matches are to be deter mined. Carolina will play its first of three home matches March 22 at 2 p.m. The Gamecocks will play host to the Winthrop Eagles at The Graveyard. The following Saturday, Hampdon Sydney will come to Columbia. Game time for that match has not been set. April 5 and 6, the Gamecocks will head to Bluefield, W.Va., to compete in the . Mountain State Invitational at the East River Soccer Complex. The number of schools sup porting baseball has also in creased. While Howard dropped the sport and C.W. Post down graded to Division II, Gardner Webb, IUPU-Fort Wayne, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Savannah State all upgraded to * Division I. “I think college baseball is very healthy,” Hall said. “There’s a lot of interest in the sport now, " it’s growing, and more people are becoming aware of it.” A major change to the format of .the College World Series should add additional excitement to the event. The two winners of the four-team brackets will meet in a best-of-three championship, instead of a one-game final—the format for the past five seasons.
