Construction CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Russell House, Scheffres said. Dining Services plans to expand seating in the Grand Marketplace and Gamecock Park next summer. “We couldn’t do everything right away,” he said. “The expan sion of the Grand Marketplace and Gamecock Park are much more significant renovations and must be done when everyone isn’t here.” The plans call for the building to be extended into part of the out door seating behind the Russell House in order to create more in door space for the dining facilities’ seating. Scheffres said extending the building will create “up-to-date formats and flows” for the Russell House’s daily rush of students and visitors. The opening of Pandini’s will come with the addition of approx imately 50 seats outside the Russell House near the entrance to the bookstore. While the Russell House gets a new look, Blossom Street’s biggest construction project—the Strom Thurmond Fitness and Wellness Center — appears, externally, to be ready for use. But construction supervisors haven’t given the ap proval to set an opening date. Members of the Boudroux Group, the facility’s contractor, will meet with members of USC’s Construction Services to discuss the building’s substantial comple tion date — the date when the site officially meets all safety standards and is suitable for public use. “The project has gone well really; it’s just a complicated project,” said Construction Services’ project man ager David Northam. “The last five percent on any construction is the toughest to get completed,” he said. Northam added that the con struction was delayed slightly by last fall’s bad weather, but a big ger delay was the university’s in creasing scope of work being done inside. An example would be the altered plans for increased dining facilities and retail space the uni versity requested last year. “There’s a lot of things you don’t see in operations of systems that have to be substantially com plete before we declare the build ing formally available for the user’s use,” Northam said.
