E-mail gamecockudesk@hotmail.com opens nationwide October 18 ■ _■ Student Government is proud to announce that once a week it will publish announcements and updates in an effort to open up communications with the student body and to better inform the student body of its goals and accomplishments. ( Executive News : Student Body President, Ankit Patel, would like to share a few executive announcements with the student body: • On Thursday, October 17th at 12:45 p.m., Student Government’s proposal to increase funding for Carolina Productions, Late Night Carolina, and the Russell House University Union will be voted on in a Board of Trustees meeting. • The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee is beginning its initial stages for the annual MLK Day Celebration. Suggestions for this year’s event are welcome in the Student Government Office in the bottom of the RHUU. • A new Student Government Committee, the Food Service Committee, has been ■ established, and is looking for one freshman, one sophomore,and one student in his or her 3rd or 4th year. Meetings are on the first Monday of the month, along with other occasional meetings throughout the month. The first , informational meeting will be on the 26th of October. Applications are available in the SG office. Student Body Vice President, Katie Dreiling, is pleased to announce that Student Government is reaching out to more students and student organizations due to a new liaison program in the Senate. Each Senator is responsible for contacting two organizations on a regular basis and to act as liaison between the organization and Student Government in an effort to further communications and find out how SG can assist them in their endeavors, and reporting this information in the weekly Senate meetings. % Dreiling would like to encourage student organizations on campus that have not signed up for a liaison to utilize this new program so that they can be assured that they will continue to hear from SG after the elections. Organizations may get more information about the program or sign up for a liaison by picking up a liaison sheet in Dreiling’s office in the SG Office in the Carolina Mall. Dreiling welcomes anyone who would like to come speak with the Senate or her about any issue that might be of concern to the students or the student body, and she looks forward to speaking with them. Senate News: Legislation update from Wednesday, October 9 SBL (02) 059 Passed by the Senate. Vetoed by the Student Body President. Moves election week to follow spring break where as it was previously prior to Spring Break. SBL (02) 060 Passed by the Senate. Vetoed by the Student Body President. Amendment moves elections to the Monday and Tuesday 3 weeks after spring break, and the run off election, if necessary, will be held the Thursday and Friday of that same week. Voting times will take place from 9am Monday to 5pm Tuesday on VIP. The Powers and Responsibilities Chair for Student Senate, Mari Ramsey, would like to encourage members of the student body to apply for the Student Senate or Online at www.sg.sc.edu • Applications can be obtained in the SG Office in the Carolina Mall and are being accepted for the colleges of Social Work, Business, Journalism, Engineering, Education, Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine. Please return applications to the SG Office by 4:00pm on October 30th. Clean Carolina Coordinator, Marie Connelly, would like to announce that the Clean Carolina Kickoff will be Sunday, October 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sign in will be at the Russell House Patio where gloves and trash bags will be provided, along with free food and free t-shirts. Organizations interested in cleaning an area monthly on campus and are not already signed up are encouraged to fill out an application in the Student Government Office. Cabinet News : Elections Commissioner, Brooke Vickery, would like to congratulate the new members of the Elections Commission: Parul Joshi Tranaka Oglesby Will Mischner Kevin Schmith Nicki Desai Rachel Keisler Radhika Engineer Sharmon Lebby Meg McNair The Elections Commission is currently working on code revisions and marketing strategies, bearing in mind the theme for the 2003 election, "CHALLENGE 2003: The Amazing Race.. .Take the Road Less Traveled." Freshman Council Advisors Nick Long and Kaleta Brown announce the completion and success of the 2002 Freshman Council Retreat at Camp Kinard. The Director of Safety, Katie McClendon, encourages students, faculty and anyone in the Columbia area to participate in Bike to School/Work Day on Thursday, October 24th in an effort to solve some of the parking problem and to raise awareness for bicycle safety. Everyone in the Columbia community is also invited to meet on USC’s Horseshoe area at 5:30 p.m. to begin a ride around town with other bicyclists. McClendon hopes this event will bring the University closer to the addition of bike lanes and signs on campus to create a safer environment for those many students who their bike to campus everyday.
