BRIEFLY Three students get academic awards Three USC students have been granted prestigious awards for their academic achievement in college. Fnurth-year political science students Kristina L. Cooper has been named one of the 40 Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholars during the program’s first year. The $30,000 scholar ship will allow her to compete j in an independent study pro gram this fall at the Ailey School at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Third-year International Studies and Spanish student Ann -j Hardman has been selected as a 2002 United States Department of State Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellow, and is the ] first USC student to earn this dis tinction, as well as the only stu dent from South Carolina to win. Robin W. Poston, a May 2001 corporate finance graduate, has been named a Golden Key Scholar, a prestigious interna tional honor awarded by Golden Key International Honour society. William M. Bailey was seen walking in a parking lot when reporting officer J. Means frisked and found a knife in his left front pocket, police said. Bailey was first seen on Field D. When Means approached him, Bailey fled in the direction of Wheat Street, police said, where he was eventually stopped. (D AUTO BREAK-IN, LARCENY OF CD PLAYER, 918 BARNWELL ST. Jillian M. Deibert said someone broke out the driver’s-side window of his car and damaged the CD player while trying to steal it. Friels □ MALICIOUS INJURY TO PERSONAL PROPERTY, 1400 WHALEY ST. Reporting officer J.R. Merrill saw Jamie D. Harrington approach Kyerra Donae Heath’s vehicle and kick it, causing damage to the rear passenger door, police said. Harrington was arrested. © ILLEGAL USE OF TELEPHONE (HARASSING), PRESTON COLLEGE, 1323 GREENE ST. The victim said someone left sexually explicit messages on his answering machine. The victim has -- erased about 18 messages. The victim was given a log sheet to keep track of the calls. Reporting officer: J.D. Jones. Friday, Aug. 30 D CRIMINAL SEXUAL ACTIVITY, KIDNAPPING, 1322 HEYWARD ST. The victim said a white male, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds and between the ages of 18 and 22, approached her while she was trying to enter the Roost. The man then grabbed her by her right hand and forced her over to the bleachers on Sarge Frye Field, where he forcibly removed the victim’s pants and raped the victim, police said. The man then fled the scene. The victim was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Reporting officer: E.A. Reporting officer J. A. Clarke met with Ron Byers, assisstant director of Blatt P.E. Center, who caught the burglary on tape. The victims said a white, older-model van with seven black passengers approached them while they were running on Greene Street. Stoudemire approached Mitchell and observed a strong ^ odor of alcohol, impaired speech and an unsteady walk, police said. (OFF MAP) Jaris Jamar Perarson became angry when his friend was escorted out of the football game, police said. The victim said Christopher Rose became physically abusive. The victim said Rose hit a second victim and threatened a third.
